<official-title>To amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to prescribe the oath or affirmation of renunciation and allegiance required to be naturalized as a citizen of the United States.</official-title>

<section id="HAE787F0EDA034A96BC904CF9C087C82" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Oath or affirmation of renunciation and allegiance</header> 
<subsection id="H9A3D944CD15146B7866DAA669F193BB0"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Revision of oath</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 337 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/8/1448">8 U.S.C. 1448</external-xref>) is amended—</text> 
<paragraph id="H659500801A5842A1945516EB90337000"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in subsection (a) by striking <quote>under section 310(b) an oath</quote> in the first sentence and all that follows through the end of the third sentence and inserting <quote>under section 310(b) the oath (or affirmation) of allegiance prescribed in subsection (e).</quote>; and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H5630956A98744D41AD647C664C714BBB"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by adding at the end the following new subsection:</text> 
<quoted-block style="USC" id="H33CAEB88CA7C41A8AA348414C9F48D50" display-inline="no-display-inline"> 
<subsection id="H782BEC8C2B434F229489000936D8E9E"><enum>(e)(1)</enum><text>Subject to paragraphs (2) and (3), the oath (or affirmation) of allegiance is as follows: <quote>I take this oath solemnly, freely, and without any mental reservation. I entirely renounce all allegiance to any foreign state or power of which I have been a subject or citizen. My fidelity and allegiance from this day forward are to the United States of America. I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution and laws of the United States, and will support and defend them against all enemies, foreign and domestic. I will bear arms, or perform noncombatant military or civilian service, on behalf of the United States when required by law. This I do solemnly swear, so help me God.</quote>.</text> 
<paragraph id="HFD1C88AA769843B4B7156757FAF54CCF" indent="up1"><enum>(2)</enum><text>If a person by reason of religious training and belief (or individual interpretation thereof), or for other reasons of good conscience, cannot take the oath prescribed in paragraph (1) with the term <term>oath</term> or <term>so help me God</term> included, the person shall take the oath in a modified form as follows:</text> 
<subparagraph id="HC8085F4F4A304B75B8D61B4D6BBE0010"><enum>(A)</enum><text>In the case that the person cannot take the oath with the term <term>oath</term> included, the term <term>affirmation</term> shall be substituted for the term <term>oath</term>.</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="H86DE73F07C1D48AE9597D4CBCE3D4D8C"><enum>(B)</enum><text>In the case that the person cannot take the oath with <quote>so help me God</quote> included, then <quote>so help me God</quote> shall be omitted.</text></subparagraph></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H7B1A7B753E7045389391DE279C80AC17" indent="up1"><enum>(3)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">If a person shows by clear and convincing evidence to the satisfaction of the Attorney General that such person, by reason of religious training and belief, cannot take the oath prescribed in paragraph (1) with the affirmation to bear arms or perform noncombatant military service, the person shall take the oath in a modified form as follows:</text> 
<subparagraph id="H67266BF4FB494EF4AEEFB949C00033E"><enum>(A)</enum><text>In the case that such person is opposed to the bearing of arms in the Armed Forces of the United States, then <quote>bear arms, or</quote> shall be omitted.</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="HD1657419DB9C4AB39B6C4700803958F4"><enum>(B)</enum><text>In the case that such person is opposed to any type of service in the Armed Forces of the United States, then <quote>bear arms, or</quote> and <quote>noncombatant military or</quote> shall be omitted.</text></subparagraph></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H07AFC9E996CF43B79128819E0882AF8F" indent="up1"><enum>(4)</enum><text>For purposes of this subsection, the term <term>religious training and belief</term> means a belief of an individual in relation to a Supreme Bring involving duties superior to those arising from any human relation, but does not include essentially political, sociological, or philosophical views or a merely personal moral code.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H5C0D43F82DD4438A8292ED1DF351998D" indent="up1"><enum>(5)</enum><text>Any reference in this title to <quote>oath</quote> or <quote>oath of allegiance</quote> under this section or subsection (a) shall be deemed to refer to the oath (or affirmation) of allegiance prescribed under this subsection. </text></paragraph></subsection><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></subsection> 
<subsection id="HB99913E05A874E4482CC946645E781C"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text>The amendments made by subsection (a) shall take effect on the date that is six months after the date of the enactment of this Act.</text> </subsection></section>
