<official-title>To require investigations by institutions of higher education of violent felonies occurring on campus.</official-title>

<section id="HAD16C473A9FA4AA2B9B5542DA7CBCE40" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline"> This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Suzanne Lyall Campus Safety Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section>
<section id="HCBF9DA65B8914836BAF88EC6B083A246"><enum>2.</enum><header>Investigations by institutions of higher education of violent felonies</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline"> Section 485 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/1092">20 U.S.C. 1092</external-xref>) is amended—</text>
<paragraph id="HA5FB057558E74429B989C35896C1734B"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by redesignating subsection (g) as subsection (h); and</text></paragraph>
<paragraph id="H4905AFCE8AB740ABA079BF5501DEE47"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by inserting after subsection (f) the following new subsection:</text>

<subsection id="H23834418A0B44FA4BB542682C460D99"><enum>(g)</enum><header>Investigation of serious violent felonies</header>
<paragraph id="H59286EF01E5C425697BA828BD9170CC"><enum>(1)</enum><header>Plans for investigation of serious violent felonies</header><text>Each institution of higher education shall, within one year after the date of enactment of the Suzanne Lyall Campus Safety Act, adopt and implement a plan providing for the investigation of any serious violent felony occurring at or on the grounds of each such institution, and providing for the investigation of a report of any missing student. Such plans shall provide for the coordination of the investigation of such crimes and reports with local law enforcement agencies. Such plans shall include, but not be limited to, written agreements with appropriate local law enforcement agencies providing for the prompt investigation of such crimes and reports.</text></paragraph>
<paragraph id="H166D04361AFD4D360037E6162EC96638"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Definitions</header><text>As used in this subsection:</text>
<subparagraph id="HA1B3DDA110B34FB2A3AC1956EDFF008"><enum>(A)</enum><header>Local law enforcement agencies</header><text>The term <term>local law enforcement agencies</term> means any agency or agencies employing peace officers or police officers for the enforcement of the laws of a State, and which has or have jurisdiction under provisions of the criminal procedure law over offenses occurring at or on the grounds of any institution subject to the provisions of this subsection.</text></subparagraph>
<subparagraph id="H731D8ADEE4F24854B90039E322393161"><enum>(B)</enum><header>Missing student</header><text>The term <term>missing student</term> means any student of an institution subject to the provisions of this subsection who resides in a facility owned or operated by such institution and who is reported to such institution as missing from his or her residence.</text></subparagraph>
<subparagraph id="HD55BE3EFDB9A431FBBA6F21601AC23AA"><enum>(C)</enum><header>Serious violent felony</header><text>The term <term>serious violent felony</term> means a serious violent felony as such term is defined by <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/18/3559">section 3559(c)</external-xref> of title 18, United States Code.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></subsection><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></section>
