<official-title>To amend title 10, United States Code, to require a member of the Armed Forces to designate a person to be authorized to direct the disposition of the member’s remains if the member should die in service.</official-title>

<section id="HB80E8A79214B4671A34549B3FA52BA22" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Requirement for members of the Armed Forces to designate a person to be authorized to direct the disposition of the member’s remains</header> 
<subsection id="H80FD7FEE2AFA425A873D23000066E63E"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Designation required</header><text><external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/10/655">Section 655</external-xref> of title 10, United States Code, is amended—</text> 
<paragraph id="H83D2FA9FC9BF44A9BE80D262006613F6"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by redesignating subsection (b) as subsection (c); and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H024E6711ABEB488B8B0552A45E99D75D"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by inserting after subsection (a) the following new subsection (b):</text>

<subsection id="H246E884C50D0494E88233042C9F8CCA2"><enum>(b)</enum> 
<paragraph id="H2A0AAEBE0C554220BE9CBA8ED481009D" display-inline="yes-display-inline"><enum>(1)</enum><text>The Secretary concerned shall, upon the enlistment or appointment of a person in the armed forces, require that the person specify in writing the person authorized to direct the disposition of the person’s remains under section 1482 of this title. The Secretary shall periodically, and whenever the member is deployed as part of a contingency operation or in other circumstances specified by the Secretary, require that such designation be reconfirmed, or modified, by the member. Whenever a member is required to make a designation under this subsection, the Secretary shall inform the member of the implications of the designation.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HFF043B3372FE46BA8BB066DC0861F8C4" indent="up1"><enum>(2)</enum><text>The current designation of a member under this subsection shall be maintained as part of the member’s Record of Emergency Data.</text></paragraph></subsection><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></subsection> 
<subsection id="H159131542A3640FB9DB6A9CC666BC5F1"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Change in designation</header><text>Subsection (c) of such section, as redesignated by subsection (a)(1), is amended by inserting <quote>or (b)</quote> after <quote>subsection (a)</quote>.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="H0427FF3852C24437AF66599041711365"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Persons authorized to direct disposition of remains</header><text>Section 1482(c) of such title is amended—</text> 
<paragraph id="HFE7835BED01F460D9DDA00C3003C334C"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by redesignating paragraphs (1) through (4) as paragraphs (2) through (5), respectively;</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HEE38F4A294D14E26BCD2FAFACBC107EA"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by inserting before paragraph (2), as so redesignated, the following new paragraph (1):</text>

<paragraph id="H4C1499E1926D4BEDAC616824A567151E"><enum>(1)</enum><text>The person designated under section 655(b) of this title.</text></paragraph><after-quoted-block>; and</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H6D6743E67AFF4BF4B0003D87A3B170C9"><enum>(3)</enum><text>in paragraph (5), as redesignated by paragraph (1), by striking <quote>clauses (1)-(3)</quote> and inserting <quote>clauses (1)-(4)</quote>. </text> </paragraph></subsection></section>
