Ms. Jackson-Lee of Texas introduced the following bill; which was
referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and in addition to
the Committee on Science, for a period to be subsequently determined by
the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall
within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned

A BILL
To amend the Safe Drinking Water Act to provide for research on methods
to combat biological contamination of public drinking water supplies,
and for other purposes.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the
United States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. RESEARCH OF BIOLOGICAL CONTAMINATION OF PUBLIC WATER
SUPPLIES.
(a) Authority.--Section 1442(a) of the Safe Drinking Water Act (42
U.S.C. 300j-1(a)) is amended by adding the following new paragraph at
the end thereof:
``(12) The Administrator shall make grants to public or nonprofit
organizations, and enter into contracts and other arrangements with any
person, to conduct research into methods to combat the biological
contamination of public water supplies.''.
(b) Funding.--Section 1442(d) of the Safe Drinking Water Act (42
U.S.C. 300j-1(a)) is amended by inserting ``(1)'' after ``(d)'' and by
adding the following new paragraph before paragraph (3):
``(2) There are authorized to be appropriated to carry out research
under subsection (a)(12) such sums as may be necessary.''.
