CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Condemning the proposed relocation to the site of the Jasenovac death
camp in Croatia of the remains of individuals who were not killed
there, including soldiers of the Croatian Ustashe regime who
participated during the Holocaust in the mass murder of Jews and
others.
Whereas the President of Croatia, Franjo Tudjman, has announced plans to
relocate to the site of the Jasenovac death camp in Croatia the remains
of individuals who were not killed there, including soldiers of the
Croatian Ustashe regime;
Whereas soldiers of that regime, which was in alliance with Nazi Germany,
participated in the murders of hundreds of thousands of Jews, Serbs, and
Gypsies, including individuals whose remains are now part of the soil of
the Jasenovac camp;
Whereas these murders constituted part of the Holocaust that was carried out in
Europe by Nazi Germany and its allies, a horrendous chapter in history
in which 6,000,000 Jews, as well as millions of others, were killed
solely because of their ethnic identities;
Whereas memorialization of this tragedy and accurate knowledge of its history
are necessary in order to avert future such occurrences;
Whereas the United States Government has recognized the importance of preserving
such memory and history by establishing its own United States Holocaust
Memorial Museum; and
Whereas the plans proposed by President Tudjman, if carried out, would confuse
history and desecrate the memory of the victims killed in the Holocaust:
Now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring),
That the Congress--
(1) condemns the proposed relocation to the site of the
Jasenovac death camp in Croatia of the remains of individuals
who were not killed there, including soldiers of the Croatian
Ustashe regime who participated during the Holocaust in the
mass murder of Jews and others;
(2) deplores this proposed relocation as an attempt to
distort the history of the Holocaust and to desecrate the
memory of its victims;
(3) calls on the Secretary of State to condemn strongly
this proposed relocation and to demand that President Tudjman
disavow it;
(4) calls on the Secretary of State, in conjunction with
our allies, to express unified opposition to this proposed
relocation and to demand its disavowal; and
(5) calls on the Chairman of the United States Holocaust
Memorial Council--
(A) to study this proposed relocation;
(B) to educate the public about the dangers of
denial and revisionism relating to the Holocaust; and
(C) to report to the Congress on the activities
described in subparagraphs (A) and (B).
