<section id="d96720e92" identifier="/us/pl/116/335/s1" style="-uslm-lc:I658146"><num class="bold" value="1">SECTION 1. </num><heading>SHORT TITLE; FINDINGS.</heading><subsection class="firstIndent0 fontsize10" id="y0fb46243-e821-11f0-a1e4-69761a48a15a" identifier="/us/pl/116/335/s1/a" style="-uslm-lc:I658120"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="a">(a) </num><heading class="fontsize10"><inline class="smallCaps">Short Title</inline>.—</heading><content>This Act may be cited as the “<shortTitle role="act">Expanding Findings for Federal Opioid Research and Treatment Act</shortTitle>” or the “<shortTitle role="act">EFFORT Act</shortTitle>”.</content></subsection>
<subsection class="firstIndent0 fontsize10" id="y0fb46244-e821-11f0-a1e4-69761a48a15a" identifier="/us/pl/116/335/s1/b" style="-uslm-lc:I658120"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="b">(b) </num><sidenote><p class="leftAlign firstIndent0 fontsize8" id="x0fb46245-e821-11f0-a1e4-69761a48a15a" style="-uslm-lc:I658180"><ref href="/us/usc/t42/s1862u">42 USC 1862u note</ref>.</p></sidenote><heading class="fontsize10"><inline class="smallCaps">Findings</inline>.—</heading><chapeau>The Congress finds that—</chapeau><paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y0fb46246-e821-11f0-a1e4-69761a48a15a" identifier="/us/pl/116/335/s1/b/1" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="1">(1) </num><content>research gaps currently exist in the prevention and treatment of opioid addiction;</content></paragraph>
<paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y0fb46247-e821-11f0-a1e4-69761a48a15a" identifier="/us/pl/116/335/s1/b/2" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="2">(2) </num><content>the National Science Foundation’s research on opioid addiction has increased understanding of the neuroscience of addiction, substance abuse intervention, the role of illicit supply networks, the secondary effects on families, the use of technology to address the opioid epidemic, and options for alternative, non-addictive therapeutics for pain; and</content></paragraph>
<paragraph class="fontsize10" id="y0fb46248-e821-11f0-a1e4-69761a48a15a" identifier="/us/pl/116/335/s1/b/3" style="-uslm-lc:I658122"><num class="fontsize10" style="-uslm-lc:emspace2" value="3">(3) </num><content>the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health have recognized that fundamental questions in basic, clinical, and translational research would benefit greatly from multidisciplinary approaches and collaboration.</content></paragraph>

<section id="d96720e142" identifier="/us/pl/116/335/s2" style="-uslm-lc:I658141"><num class="fontsize12" value="2">SEC. 2. </num><sidenote><p class="leftAlign firstIndent0 fontsize8" id="x0fb46249-e821-11f0-a1e4-69761a48a15a" style="-uslm-lc:I658180">Consultation.</p><p class="leftAlign firstIndent0 fontsize8" id="x0fb4624a-e821-11f0-a1e4-69761a48a15a" style="-uslm-lc:I658180"><ref href="/us/usc/t42/s1862u">42 USC 1862u</ref>.</p></sidenote><heading>NSF SUPPORT OF RESEARCH ON OPIOID ADDICTION.</heading><content style="-uslm-lc:I658120">  The Director of the National Science Foundation, in consultation with the Director of the National Institutes of Health, shall support merit-reviewed and competitively awarded research on the science of opioid addiction.</content></section>
