<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>119th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 949</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20250311" legis-day="20250310">March 11 (legislative day, March 10), 2025</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S406">Mr. Kelly</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="S408">Mr. Hickenlooper</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S324">Mrs. Shaheen</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S432">Mr. Gallego</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S394">Ms. Smith</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="S390">Mr. Van Hollen</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSEG00">Committee on Energy and Natural Resources</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To ensure that the National Park Service is fully staffed, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body><section id="S1" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Protect our Parks Act of 2025</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id522796078da048fab70bbafa7c37af3c"><enum>2.</enum><header>Definitions</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">In this Act:</text><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idf1e11157971f4fac8e9e7c1a85b6a3d7"><enum>(1)</enum><header>Secretary</header><text>The term <quote>Secretary</quote> means the Secretary of the Interior.</text></paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id85d6b21c55cf4fc08c82dca5cc4737a5"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Service</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The term <quote>Service</quote> means the National Park Service.</text></paragraph></section><section commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id3aa1986bf7e8443bb0317577d4a2063a"><enum>3.</enum><header>National Park Service staffing and personnel</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">As soon as practicable after the date of enactment of this Act, using funds previously appropriated to the Secretary for such purposes, the Secretary shall—</text><paragraph id="idb679d8bc092a486e8ff6313f7661890c"><enum>(1)</enum><text>take such actions as are necessary—</text><subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id48fcf660be9344d5938a1376bccdaef9"><enum>(A)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">to ensure that the units of the National Park System are fully staffed to ensure visitor safety and enjoyment and natural and cultural resource protection at the units of the National Park System; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="idbff38f5a36e5438ca73ef0e1f40e4eb5"><enum>(B)</enum><text>to ensure that all maintenance staff positions at the Service are filled; and</text></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="idccf0349ea8734126bb4320bf78a226bf"><enum>(2)</enum><text>reinstate any individuals who were involuntarily removed or otherwise terminated from employment with the Service during the period beginning on January 20, 2025, and ending on February 25, 2025. </text></paragraph></section><section commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id4a234c4c61e246729b4c028e56928132"><enum>4.</enum><header>Continuation of authorized National Park Service projects</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">The Secretary shall have the authority to continue to carry out any Service project for which funds are authorized or appropriated under—</text><paragraph id="id733ba6c8f6924b4396b02147bfab8a7b"><enum>(1)</enum><text>the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/16/6801">16 U.S.C. 6801 et seq.</external-xref>);</text></paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id072cefa4d6a24e8bbd97740f1749e538"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">the Great American Outdoors Act (<external-xref legal-doc="public-law" parsable-cite="pl/116/152">Public Law 116–152</external-xref>; 134 Stat. 682);</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idcd19316a41bf47cdb6ea3a44b1f794de"><enum>(3)</enum><text>the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (<external-xref legal-doc="public-law" parsable-cite="pl/117/58">Public Law 117–58</external-xref>; 135 Stat. 429); or</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id9ea16a19c5224e73b5e5a37de90c5d2a"><enum>(4)</enum><text>Public Law 117–169 (commonly known as the <quote>Inflation Reduction Act of 2022</quote>) (136 Stat. 1818).</text></paragraph></section></legis-body></bill>
