Proffitt Act of 2025</short-title></quote>. </text></section><section id="H3A92181E0A2C4BC0A4E053ED0A099850"><enum>2.</enum><header>Inclusion of certain retired public safety officers in the public safety officers’ death benefits program</header><subsection id="H4414037FE92045DB8F8219F0720E99A3"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 1201 of title I of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/34/10281">34 U.S.C. 10281</external-xref>) is amended by adding at the end the following:</text><quoted-block style="OLC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="HDF905B540C8248ED9B3659E2369AD2F1"><subsection id="H1DEE5D6BE46E4AD49249C0EF66AEC586"><enum>(p)</enum><header>Personal injury to retired law enforcement officer</header><paragraph id="idF431CD761CDC408E99B559A5B7D6CAC2"><enum>(1)</enum><header>Definition</header><text>In this subsection, the term <term>retired law enforcement officer</term> means an individual who separated from service in good standing as a law enforcement officer in an official capacity at a public agency with or without compensation.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H4C6DCE483F6D46D49B91C48BE44C14E3"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Eligibility</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">A retired law enforcement officer shall be eligible for a benefit under this part if the officer died or became permanently and totally disabled as the direct and proximate result of a personal injury resulting from a targeted attack because of the retired law enforcement officer’s service as a law enforcement officer.</text></paragraph></subsection><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection><subsection id="H6042FF2BCE244528A9E8A0BC9EC032E0"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Retroactive applicability</header><paragraph id="HCCF58311732A4AA992BA128B6D7C6EEA"><enum>(1)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Except as provided in paragraph (2), the amendments made by this section shall—</text><subparagraph id="H5E170F70FF004D95A585B48D32AD4257"><enum>(A)</enum><text>take effect on the date of enactment of this Act; and </text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="HD958D56824FE435781E1C83AA4B65104"><enum>(B)</enum><text>apply to any matter—</text><clause id="id9AA241A7882F4D9FB6D225DE70344DCD"><enum>(i)</enum><text>pending before the Bureau of Justice Assistance or otherwise on the date of enactment of this Act; or</text></clause><clause id="idA89BBFD868754529BD082683B0D37456"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>filed (consistent with pre-existing effective dates) or accruing after the date of enactment of this Act.</text></clause></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="HB39ED98281AE4C569B89851759281192"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Exceptions</header><text>The amendment made by this section shall apply to any action taken against a retired law enforcement officer described in section 1201(p) of title I of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (as added by this Act) on or after January 1, 2012.</text></paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
