            <header>Short title</header>
 <text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Work Zone Safety Enhancement Act</short-title></quote>.</text>

            <enum>2.</enum>
            <header>Work zone safety</header>
            <subsection commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idb1913ae623214e8d847221b5f2e5a096">
                <enum>(a)</enum>
                <header display-inline="yes-display-inline">In general</header>
 <text>Section 402 of title 23, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following:</text>

                    <subsection commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id862effc6dbe2424fafc7937d34891043">
                        <enum>(p)</enum>
                        <header>Work zone safety</header>
                        <paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id99e23c9536fb41ccbe4ed6d3e3261c98">
                            <enum>(1)</enum>
                            <header>Use of funds</header>
 <text>Subject to the requirements of the applicable triennial highway safety plan of the State, as approved by the Secretary under subsection (k), a State may use a portion of the amounts received under this section to promote the reduction of crashes, injuries, and fatalities in and adjacent to work zones, including—</text>
                            <subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id6210f06ddbaf4dee93fe9d9514b383ef">
                                <enum>(A)</enum>
 <text>providing grants, overtime, equipment, and operational support for law enforcement agencies to conduct dedicated high-visibility enforcement and safety patrols in or adjacent to work zones; </text>
                            </subparagraph>
                            <subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="iddb21912ce91e436d8b03e994f142a774">
                                <enum>(B)</enum>
 <text display-inline="yes-display-inline">developing and deploying work zone modules for driver education, licensing examinations, and refresher trainings for commercial drivers and the general public; </text>
                            </subparagraph>
                            <subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id728735c76b894df1abd35ee4a1ccc752">
                                <enum>(C)</enum>
 <text display-inline="yes-display-inline">purchasing, deploying, testing, and maintaining work zone alerting and intrusion-mitigation technologies (such as portable variable message signs, radar speed trailers, queue detection, connected-vehicle or in-vehicle alerts, and intrusion detection sensors), including pilot and demonstration projects;</text>
                            </subparagraph>
                            <subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="ida96aa9ca7052453fab79b7be4ac05d56">
                                <enum>(D)</enum>
 <text display-inline="yes-display-inline">implementing training and certification programs for flaggers, inspectors, and construction personnel on traveler management and worker protection; and</text>
                            </subparagraph>
                            <subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id985a41098c6548fdbe9f8cadecee0df4">
                                <enum>(E)</enum>
 <text display-inline="yes-display-inline">collecting work zone crash and near-miss data, evaluating countermeasures, and funding independent program evaluations and demonstration.</text>
                            </subparagraph>
                        </paragraph>
                        <paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id12afb34bf0cb4e17aeb4143fb612075f">
                            <enum>(2)</enum>
                            <header>Priority</header>
 <text>In carrying out an activity described in paragraph (1), a State shall prioritize assisting Tribal governments and rural areas.</text>
                        </paragraph>

                <enum>(b)</enum>
                <header>GAO study</header>
 <text>Not later than 2 years after the date of enactment of this Act, the Comptroller General of the United States shall carry out, and submit to Congress a report describing the results of, a study on the effectiveness of work zone safety programs, including the program under section 402(p) of title 23, United States Code.</text>
            </subsection>
