            <enum>1.</enum>
            <header>Short title</header>
 <text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Safe Routes Improvement Act</short-title></quote>.</text>
        </section>

            <enum>2.</enum>
            <header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Safe routes to school</header>
            <subsection commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id66c7193c5cd248788da044ad7a8e4cfb">
                <enum>(a)</enum>
                <header>In general</header>
 <text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 208 of title 23, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following:</text>

                        <enum>(j)</enum>
                        <header>Safe routes to school coordinator</header>
                        <paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idf628fae18dcf44d4ad2f9893786a02e0">
                            <enum>(1)</enum>
                            <header>In general</header>
 <text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Each State shall designate a coordinator of the safe routes to school program in the State.</text>
                        </paragraph>
                        <paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id157ddbd84a694fd4b3eb009584cd5a1f">
                            <enum>(2)</enum>
                            <header>Duties</header>
                            <subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="ida28975003d0641688e768a04f5c9451b">
                                <enum>(A)</enum>
                                <header>In general</header>
 <text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The duty of a coordinator under paragraph (1) shall be to serve as the point of contact for the safe routes to school program in the State.</text>
                            </subparagraph>
                            <subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idede16b6297ad4bf094e70668515b08ac">
                                <enum>(B)</enum>
                                <header>Limitation</header>
 <text>The Secretary may not require a coordinator under paragraph (1) to carry out any other duties except as authorized by Congress.</text>
                            </subparagraph>
                        </paragraph>
                        <paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id7c2d6506207043109205715138b0b07f">
                            <enum>(3)</enum>
                            <header>Use of existing staff</header>
 <text>A State may designate an existing employee of the State as a coordinator under paragraph (1).</text>
                        </paragraph>
                        <paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id94a112d5e8eb47dc9235b45d1c53837b">
                            <enum>(4)</enum>
                            <header>Contact information</header>
 <text>Each State shall provide contact information for the coordinator under paragraph (1) on the website of the State department of transportation.</text>
                        </paragraph>
                        <paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id3c20ecd2d28d4ee28ee60176bc600973">
                            <enum>(5)</enum>
                            <header>Designation of position</header>
 <text display-inline="yes-display-inline">A vacancy in the position of coordinator under paragraph (1) shall be filled by not later than 180 days after the date on which the vacancy begins.</text>
                        </paragraph>
                        <paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id9b8dfd7706f14b65a96ec37c1e925d9b">
                            <enum>(6)</enum>
                            <header>Use of existing funds</header>
 <text display-inline="yes-display-inline">A State may use amounts made available under section 133(h) or section 148 for the salary of the coordinator under paragraph (1).</text>
                        </paragraph>

                <enum>(b)</enum>
                <header>Conforming amendment</header>
 <text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 208(g) of title 23, United States Code, is amended by striking paragraph (3).</text>
