<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>119th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 1522</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20250430">April 30, 2025</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S407">Mr. Hagerty</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSGA00">Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To require the District of Columbia to comply with Federal immigration laws.</official-title></form><legis-body style="OLC" display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause" id="H71160AC04F4C43489EBE607FE1CAAA4F"><section id="id4537ff1c0b8a4c2899f316a273f67043" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>District of Columbia Federal Immigration Compliance Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section section-type="subsequent-section" id="H216409005C4C47F8A66139F48FD7D311"><enum>2.</enum><header>Prohibition on District of Columbia serving as sanctuary jurisdiction</header><subsection id="HE471AD4878174A81B6CF2BDFD2C3C88B"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text>Except as provided under subsection (b), the District of Columbia may not have in effect a statute, ordinance, policy, or practice that prohibits or restricts any entity or official of the District government from—</text><paragraph id="HA1A6C66CA319465A96686D7F6FEE8401"><enum>(1)</enum><text>sending, receiving, maintaining, or exchanging with any Federal, State, or local government entity information regarding the citizenship or immigration status (lawful or unlawful) of any individual; or</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H16066F803CBD41329C6599728DA1D78C"><enum>(2)</enum><text>complying with a request lawfully made by the Department of Homeland Security under section 236 or 287 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/8/1226">8 U.S.C. 1226</external-xref>, 1357) to comply with a detainer for, or notify about the release of, an individual.</text></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="H0C6A105E5D104F89B53BB58273092231"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Exception</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The District of Columbia shall not be in violation of subsection (a) solely because it has a policy whereby its officials will not—</text><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id46d8b67fc7044bccb2db297b158cc63c"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">share information regarding an individual who comes forward as a victim of or a witness to a criminal offense; or</text></paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id10f1abf32e4b4894a509a0ac7a190a3a"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">comply with a request made by the Department of Homeland Security under section 236 or 287 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/8/1226">8 U.S.C. 1226</external-xref>, 1357) to comply with a detainer regarding an individual who comes forward as a victim of or a witness to a criminal offense.</text></paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
