<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>119th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 1256</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20250402">April 2, 2025</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S331">Mrs. Gillibrand</sponsor> (for herself and <cosponsor name-id="S270">Mr. Schumer</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSEG00">Committee on Energy and Natural Resources</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To authorize the Pines Foundation to establish the Fire Island AIDS Memorial, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause"><section section-type="section-one" id="id6c7787088bc44162aad9ee585a47f0bb" changed="not-changed"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Fire Island AIDS Memorial Establishment Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="idf3dd030fe1ad47a9a72cfd2f7dcd6aa5" changed="not-changed"><enum>2.</enum><header>Purposes</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">The purposes of the Act are—</text><paragraph id="id0b155a8130c0483cadd4afe5062583d3" changed="not-changed"><enum>(1)</enum><text>to honor and remember the many residents of Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove, New York, who suffered and died from the AIDS epidemic; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id0418f3daba544c1797617db5c8b71823" changed="not-changed"><enum>(2)</enum><text>to educate future generations about the AIDS epidemic and the impact of the AIDS epidemic on the Fire Island communities in the State of New York.</text></paragraph></section><section id="id3d04150afbbb4d51842378a97bd242d0" changed="not-changed"><enum>3.</enum><header>Definitions</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">In this Act:</text><paragraph id="id9c10c5b6e228426db48d61562125af3e" changed="not-changed"><enum>(1)</enum><header>Foundation</header><text>The term <term>Foundation</term> means the Pines Foundation, a tax-exempt organization affiliated with the Fire Island Pines Property Owners’ Association.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id96522140bc2a458cbfc9205559b352e5" changed="not-changed"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Memorial</header><text>The term <term>Memorial</term> means the Fire Island AIDS Memorial authorized to be established under section 4(a).</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idd8c369385fc34f31902cdc6faade46ea" changed="not-changed"><enum>(3)</enum><header>Secretary</header><text>The term <term>Secretary</term> means the Secretary of the Interior.</text></paragraph></section><section id="id8b35d33ee0394a2e881c2b674596e6f4" changed="not-changed"><enum>4.</enum><header>Fire Island AIDS Memorial</header><subsection id="id0997e2fba681482e83ddac0f5c471c43" changed="not-changed"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Authorization To establish Memorial</header><text>Subject to subsection (c) and any terms and conditions the Secretary considers appropriate, the Foundation may establish and maintain a memorial within the boundaries of Fire Island National Seashore to honor the residents of Fire Island who died of AIDS, to be known as the <quote>Fire Island AIDS Memorial</quote>.</text></subsection><subsection id="id12204867cf9b4adbbad73c63625237ba" changed="not-changed"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Use of federal funds prohibited</header><text>Federal funds may not be used to design, procure, prepare, install, or maintain the Memorial.</text></subsection><subsection id="idfc5a40cdbc874a9084f909a9eebac50b" changed="not-changed"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Design and location of memorial</header><text>The design and location of the Memorial shall be subject to the approval of the Secretary.</text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
