<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>119th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 1044</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20250313">March 13, 2025</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S402">Ms. Rosen</sponsor> (for herself and <cosponsor name-id="S343">Mr. Boozman</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSFI00">Committee on Finance</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To amend title XVIII of the Social Security Act to make improvements to the redistribution of residency slots under the Medicare program after a hospital closes.</official-title></form><legis-body display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause"><section section-type="section-one" id="S1"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Physicians for Underserved Areas Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="id22D27AD2424543EC8E5E4F3F315ECC9C"><enum>2.</enum><header>Improvements to the redistribution of residency slots under the Medicare program after a hospital closes</header><subsection id="idEEC0C882AF864194A12BBDE6D19D44E8"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text>Section 1886(h)(4)(H)(vi) of the Social Security Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/42/1395ww">42 U.S.C. 1395ww(h)(4)(H)(vi)</external-xref>) is amended—</text><paragraph id="id2525C66405DA42A8B61BA9045129B397"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in subclause (II)—</text><subparagraph id="id5028D430B2534611A5DCD039DC0B0F67"><enum>(A)</enum><text>by striking item (cc) and redesignating item (dd) as item (cc); and </text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="idBC3AF343A0FD4575B1AB70F6BCB997F2"><enum>(B)</enum><text>in item (cc), as redesignated under subparagraph (A)—</text><clause id="id469206B8F942416CBC68409CB2A7FB78"><enum>(i)</enum><text>by striking <quote>Fourth</quote> and inserting <quote>Third</quote>; and</text></clause><clause id="idC577BEBB91FE40F7A16AC8201CF02B0D"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>by striking <quote>item (cc)</quote> and inserting <quote>item (bb)</quote>; and</text></clause></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="id7122E254D3674D75A1E6F8161798EC8B"><enum>(2)</enum><text>in subclause (III), by striking <quote>likelihood of filling</quote> and all that follows and inserting the following: “likelihood of—</text><quoted-block style="OLC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id24DB99E9712D4FBE888DD8B58D0368C4"><item id="idD10794390C6A4AAD876DA56EF4458A48"><enum>(aa)</enum><text>starting to utilize the positions made available under this clause within 2 years; and</text></item><item id="idCC8DA8B842304DE28C207D73D31B9EA6"><enum>(bb)</enum><text>filling the positions made available under this clause within 5 years.</text></item><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></subsection><subsection commented="no" id="id22BCC17F5FDF42E9AFD2EC094A4FB676"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text>The amendments made by subsection (a) shall apply to the redistribution of residency slots with respect to hospitals that close on or after the date of enactment of this Act.</text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
