<official-title display="yes">To direct the Director of the United States Geological Survey to establish a program to map zones that are at greater risk of sinkhole formation, and for other purposes.<pagebreak/></official-title>

<section id="H44F3C897C68B4966B32608F48377367A" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Sinkhole Mapping Act of 2025</short-title></quote>.</text></section> <section id="H38BE63AE4FCB4E0BBD332B87A08FCACF" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header>Sinkhole hazard identification</header> <subsection id="H1970992AA5174C5FA3C221689F6B51C7"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Subject to the availability of appropriations made in advance for such purpose, the Director of the United States Geological Survey shall establish a program to—</text> 
<paragraph id="H167D3F2EED5A4B10962566F651E43B26"><enum>(1)</enum><text>study the short-term and long-term mechanisms that cause sinkholes, including extreme storm events, prolonged droughts causing shifts in water management practices, aquifer depletion, and other major changes in water use; and</text></paragraph> <paragraph id="H0305E841EE264A558692E61EF66B724D"><enum>(2)</enum><text>develop maps that depict zones that are at greater risk of sinkhole formation.</text></paragraph></subsection> 
<subsection id="H528EFA6831AF4E72BA190A06DB9743BC"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Use of certain data</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">In developing maps under subsection (a)(2), the Director of the United States Geological Survey shall utilize 3D elevation data (as that term is defined in section 2 of the National Landslide Preparedness Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/43/3101">43 U.S.C. 3101</external-xref>)) collected pursuant to section 5 of that Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/43/3104">43 U.S.C. 3104</external-xref>).</text></subsection> <subsection id="HF0CB611F808948179DE6268F545939FE"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Review of maps</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Once during each 5-year period, or more often as the Director of the United States Geological Survey determines is necessary, the Director shall assess the need to revise and update the maps developed under this section.</text></subsection>
