R. 4501</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20250717">July 17, 2025</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="H001100">Mr. Hurd of Colorado</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="K000376">Mr. Kelly of Pennsylvania</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="B000740">Mrs. Bice</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="G000576">Mr. Grothman</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="L000599">Mr. Lawler</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="J000311">Mr. Jack</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="F000459">Mr. Fleischmann</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HWM00">Committee on Ways and Means</committee-name>, and in addition to the Committee on <committee-name committee-id="HJU00">the Judiciary</committee-name>, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned</action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To protect the citizenship of, and provide tax-exempt status to, any American elected as the Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H0DE0C8AF013C4D0085D3507AF859B5AC" style="OLC"><section id="H4FF801722B464527B44BE5B62ED1A9AB" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Holy Sovereignty Protection Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="H82E6235E59764A7DB0A8627E452CADCB"><enum>2.</enum><header>Protection of United States citizenship</header><subsection id="H2A72F6F39D624E6DB21E3D92258129BE"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The United States citizenship of any individual elected as the Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church may not be revoked.</text></subsection><subsection id="H328034A9849D4F0DBF8B26B2CE045058"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text>This section shall take effect upon the date of enactment of this Act.</text></subsection></section><section id="H107403259BBE456C8AF5FFFDE7C74242"><enum>3.</enum><header>Tax-exempt status</header><subsection id="H7B0D69884C6F439E827B020C9029BA0F"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">In the case of any citizen of the United States, such individual shall be exempt from taxation under subtitle A of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 with respect to any taxable year any portion of which he is serving as the Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.</text></subsection><subsection id="H86E3E992171249DE8B740146FCA9D8F6"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text>This section shall apply to taxable years ending after May 8, 2025.</text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
