<section id="H92BB993DDC1A4FE28F8381DC8086DDC7" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Bridge Protection Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section> <section id="H35DA7B424BDB421C807A4F6A24B576B1" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header>Additional requirements for bridge projects</header> <subsection id="H9217E31952EF43D6980702F42AD18F59"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline"><external-xref legal-doc="usc-chapter" parsable-cite="usc-chapter/23/1">Chapter 1</external-xref> of title 23, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following:</text>

<section id="H3D85B37AA4A645ACA10EADE5C9815266"><enum>180.</enum><header>Requirements for certain bridges</header> 
<subsection id="H90C3A280F0214CA3BC81D7C210A1C6A7"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text>As a condition for receiving funds under this title, the Secretary of Transportation shall require any owner of a covered bridge to conduct vessel collision vulnerability assessments using the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Method II and submit the results of such assessment to the Secretary.</text></subsection> <subsection id="H330EBA14A8BD4D1FA39DB00E532A3996"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Results</header> <paragraph id="H9377E02E135E44C3A9E9226698A5D5A6"><enum>(1)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">If a covered bridge assessed under subsection (a) exceeds the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials risk threshold for such bridge, the owner shall develop and implement a risk reduction plan not later than 1 year after the completion of the assessment under subsection (a).</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H3AA726299521458696716A2A192B4489"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Ineligibility for future grants</header><text>Beginning on October 1, 2026, if an owner of a bridge required to develop a risk reduction plan under paragraph (1) fails to develop and implement such plan, the owner shall be ineligible for any Federal grant relating to such bridge, unless such owner receives an extension to implement such plan from the Secretary of Transportation.</text></paragraph></subsection> <subsection id="H52B65CFDA9E94B7F94B0C175C2CB645A"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Integration of data</header> <paragraph id="H7EE11A9C36E44D7E9793C7CC69F42D4E"><enum>(1)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Not later than 1 year after the completion of an assessment under subsection (a), the Secretary of Transportation shall integrate the results of such assessment into the National Bridge Inventory of the Department of Transportation.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H57D8F52EB07847AA91BF7FC6EF2D0115" commented="no"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Protection of sensitive data</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">In integrating results under paragraph (1), the Secretary may withhold any sensitive secure data that the Secretary determines appropriate to preserve the security of the bridges involved in such assessments.</text></paragraph></subsection> <subsection id="H2DA6FC9E2F10475DBF2BC935A3C1C392"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Covered bridge defined</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">In this section, the term <quote>covered bridge</quote> means a bridge over navigable water that was built before 1996.</text></subsection></section> 
<section id="H98F72ED38174454BBBEE9394122BEC0C"><enum>181.</enum><header>Interdisciplinary Bridge Safety team</header> 
<subsection id="H27F9DC6B5E56445B9351940D4EB337DB"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The Secretary of Transportation shall establish an interdisciplinary bridge safety team within the Department of Transportation to provide guidance, oversee compliance, and maintain a national vulnerability database for bridges.</text></subsection> <subsection id="H4EE47F7439D8428E9C95249A25A6111A"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Membership</header><text>The team established under subsection (a) shall be comprised of detailees from the Federal Highway Administration, the Coast Guard, and the Corps of Engineers.</text></subsection></section> 
<section id="H42E9DCC223A9469395AA36DD41F563BA"><enum>182.</enum><header>Bridge vulnerability grant program</header> 
<subsection id="HEFB18A9A8D114BE6B615B522E6025C62"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The Secretary of Transportation shall establish a program to provide grants on a competitive basis for assessments and physical improvements for covered bridges.</text></subsection> <subsection id="HE89599A527BC45E78B29CAB54F8F4B6C"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Applications</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">To be eligible to receive a grant under this section, an owner of a covered bridge shall submit to the Secretary an application in such form, in such manner, and containing such information as the Secretary may require.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="H3829A0E6DB924BF996B0A6609176E809"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Use of funds</header><text>A recipient of a grant under this section may use the grant provided to carry out assessments or make physical improvements to a covered bridge.</text></subsection> <subsection id="HBCE0F599BEC247A2B59D230F3CBF9147"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Authorization of appropriations</header><text>There are authorized to be appropriated to carry out the program under this section, $500,000,000 for fiscal years 2026 through 2030.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="HD9670ECA0DD948B095CE205484BA4DC7"><enum>(e)</enum><header>Covered bridge defined</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">In this section, the term <quote>covered bridge</quote> means a bridge over navigable water that was built before 1996.</text></subsection></section><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection> <subsection id="H6BE53924B0D44108B81072FBBDEE6176"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Clerical amendment</header><text>The analysis for <external-xref legal-doc="usc-chapter" parsable-cite="usc-chapter/23/1">chapter 1</external-xref> of title 23, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following:</text>
