<section section-type="section-one" id="HDCF4853538434741A193F5A81FBD8661"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Taiwan Representative Office Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section> <section id="H2699440E8B94491BB24BB81F14A5A735"><enum>2.</enum><header>Designation of and references to Taiwan Representative Office</header> <subsection id="H335E24B9577142BA9481E27B61672944"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Statement of policy</header><text>It shall be the policy of the United States, consistent with the Taiwan Relations Act (<external-xref legal-doc="public-law" parsable-cite="pl/96/8">Public Law 96–8</external-xref>; <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/22/3301">22 U.S.C. 3301 et seq.</external-xref>) and the Six Assurances, originally conveyed to Taiwan by President Ronald Reagan in 1982—</text>
<paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H1D76B11BB13B47769F89C6C9A1A55466"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">to provide the people of Taiwan with de facto diplomatic treatment equivalent to foreign countries, nations, states, governments, or similar entities; and</text></paragraph> <paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H50DC57C7B6C54C49AB385C69105ADC44"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">consistent with the policy described in paragraph (1), to rename the <quote>Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office</quote> in the United States as the <quote>Taiwan Representative Office</quote>.</text></paragraph></subsection>
<subsection id="H3F5E35FE02374066927155B69EB1E316"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Renaming</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The Secretary of State shall seek to enter into negotiations with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office to rename its office in the District of Colombia as the <quote>Taiwan Representative Office</quote>.</text></subsection> <subsection id="H45D5EC3DC44F4902ACB1E051525E90E4"><enum>(c)</enum><header>References</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">If the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office is renamed as the Taiwan Representative Office, any reference in a law, map, regulation, document, paper, or other record of the United States Government to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office shall be deemed to be a reference to the Taiwan Representative Office, including for all official purposes of the Government of the United States, all courts of the United States, and any proceedings thereof.</text></subsection>
<subsection id="H2D4F274A46DA4888975FC836009A0F2C"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Rule of construction</header><text>Nothing in this section may be construed as—</text> <paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H7E5B94F0B7F243F88522832467F7A9B6"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">entailing the restoration of diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (Taiwan); or</text></paragraph>
<paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H0E323605356B4D068D36A685BDB6FFAA"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">altering the position of the United States with respect to the international status of Taiwan.</text></paragraph></subsection></section> </legis-body></bill>
