<whereas><text>Whereas more than 932,000 individuals in the United States have died from a drug overdose since 1999;</text></whereas> <whereas><text>Whereas overdoses involving opioids killed nearly 69,000 people in 2020, and over 82 percent of those deaths involved synthetic opioids;</text></whereas> 
<whereas><text>Whereas substance use disorder and drug overdose affect all socioeconomic groups, racial and ethnic groups, geographical regions, and ages;</text></whereas> <whereas><text>Whereas substance use disorder is a chronic disease, and recognizing it as such decreases stigma and acknowledges that substance use may be beyond an individual’s control;</text></whereas> 
<whereas><text>Whereas overdose deaths are preventable, and countless lives can be saved through increased awareness, effective prevention strategies, timely intervention, comprehensive treatment, and robust recovery support;</text></whereas> <whereas><text>Whereas communities across the Nation have been pained by substance use disorder through the premature loss of lives and the stigma associated with drug-related fatalities; and</text></whereas> 
<whereas><text>Whereas the opioid crisis imposes an estimated annual economic burden of $1,000,000,000,000 on the United States, encompassing health care costs, lost productivity, criminal justice expenditures, and social services, while devastating communities and families across the Nation: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="H8C28ED1A9B6E4A4EAA96EAE57620E78C"> <section id="H692701433F9C4B3D819ED2E89D03AAC4" section-type="undesignated-section" display-inline="yes-display-inline"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text> 
<paragraph id="HD49A2D3DE8C543BBBCE9161A656F6D74"><enum>(1)</enum><text>recognizes Overdose Awareness Day in the United States;</text></paragraph> <paragraph id="H5CC4AF3BCA9A41EEBD60898BA6C7B475"><enum>(2)</enum><text>commits to advancing and passing bipartisan policies that reduce the stigma surrounding substance use disorders and overdoses; and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H349F8B058D374C5BA2ECF8BE8E67D581"><enum>(3)</enum><text>is dedicated to collaborating with States, localities, businesses, nongovernmental organizations, patients, and families to support a comprehensive system that promotes prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery from opioid use disorder.</text></paragraph></section> </resolution-body></resolution>
