Trump was an abhorrent act of cowardice that must be universally condemned and that the only appropriate place for the Nation to settle political disputes is at the ballot box on election day.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas former President Donald J. Trump hosted a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in the middle of remarks, former President Trump turned his head and was shot in the ear by an assailant attempting to end Trump’s life;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the assailant murdered Corey Comperatore, a courageous father of 2, husband, and pillar of his community who sacrificed his life so his family could keep theirs;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas political violence, in all of its manifestations and from any political persuasion, must be condemned;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, prior to the attempted assassination of former President Trump, many Democrats often recklessly referred to the 45th President as a <quote>dictator</quote>, even comparing him to the profoundly wicked mass murderer Adolf Hitler;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas President Joe Biden had mentioned a week earlier that it was <quote>time to put Trump in a bulls-eye</quote>, and has repeatedly referred to former President Trump and his supporters as <quote>an existential threat</quote> to United States democracy, arguing <quote>we cannot let Trump win</quote>;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the responsibility for the attempted assassination is squarely with the assailant;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas several members of the Democratic Party, including Joe Biden, have nevertheless utilized inflammatory language to justify violence against Donald Trump, including by saying (of Trump): <quote>If we were in high school, I’d take him behind the gym and beat the hell out of him</quote>;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas a call to civility and a <quote>lowering of the temperature</quote> should begin with the incumbent President’s own personal example;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the unprecedented animosity toward former President Trump was once again demonstrated by the introduction of H.R. 8081, the DISGRACED Former Protectees Act, which aimed to take away Trump’s Secret Service detail; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas such legislation was intended to fetishize violence and placate the worst impulses of a hyperpartisan political constituency, and should be dismissed out of hand: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="H0AF46C5EE18A4C039FC97E310F4E2D30"><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="HA82393C1141A4CC6884328412DA86132"><enum/><text>That it is the sense of the House of Representatives that the—</text><paragraph id="H61127BC642214A3C8042CC2215F9808B"><enum>(1)</enum><text>attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump was an abhorrent act of cowardice that must be universally condemned; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H8BE1DD0927DF4790BAB4400E9952FC91"><enum>(2)</enum><text>only appropriate place for the Nation to settle political disputes is at the ballot box on election day.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
