RES. 1280</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20240607">June 7, 2024</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="C001054">Mr. Carl</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="M001212">Mr. Moore of Alabama</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="R000575">Mr. Rogers of Alabama</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="A000055">Mr. Aderholt</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S001220">Mr. Strong</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="P000609">Mr. Palmer</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="S001185">Ms. Sewell</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HED00">Committee on Education and the Workforce</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Commending the University of South Alabama on the occasion of its 60th anniversary and its years of service to the State of Alabama and the United States.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas the University of South Alabama was chartered by a Legislative Act on May 3, 1963, following the efforts of local leaders who saw a great need for a 4-year-degree-granting institution along the fast-growing Alabama Gulf Coast;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the University of South Alabama’s first classes were held on June 8, 1964, on a new campus in West Mobile, with 276 total students;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in 1969, the Alabama Legislature passed a resolution establishing a new medical school and, in 1973, the University of South Alabama began providing medical education at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in 1970, the University of South Alabama’s adoption of Mobile General Hospital and the creation of its new medical school gave rise to what is today University of South Alabama Health (USA Health);</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas USA Health in Mobile, Alabama—</text><paragraph id="HA9833AEB1C264D85884FBBD799F1E40D"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">is the only academic health system along the upper Gulf Coast; </text></paragraph><paragraph id="H95553E91080B4464BF46DDF5704354FC"><enum>(2)</enum><text>is home to USA Health Children’s &amp; Women’s Hospital, which serves the area with the only pediatric emergency center, Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit; </text></paragraph><paragraph id="H5F3101961B68447495E34702349670F6"><enum>(3)</enum><text>is home to USA Health University Hospital, which serves the area with the only Level I trauma center, burn center, and compressive stroke center; </text></paragraph><paragraph id="H9E0CFF18384641718558680EED8C1759"><enum>(4)</enum><text>is home to USA Health Providence Hospital, which serves the area with a full-service, 349-bed hospital that provides 24/7 emergency care and a Level III trauma center; </text></paragraph><paragraph id="H7ED4EF17BCB244A09475A87A5B4BF101"><enum>(5)</enum><text>is home to the USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute, which serves the area as the only academic cancer treatment and research facility along the upper Gulf Coast, using continuous research and technological advancements to best treat patients; and </text></paragraph><paragraph id="H8E8F7F11902B4324B2586A5564D5E0D9"><enum>(6)</enum><text>is home to the USA Health Physician Enterprise, the region’s largest multispecialty practice, providing patients with primary and specialty care, including many services unique in the community;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, from its first class of 276 students, the University of South Alabama has grown to host more than 13,500 students annually, participating in over 115 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs through its 10 colleges and schools;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the University of South Alabama’s offerings include—</text><paragraph id="H30F17E2543CB4DDAAA585460BB737628"><enum>(1)</enum><text>programs in medicine, nursing, and allied health with 1 of only 2 allopathic medical schools in the State;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HD1AFBAC38CE44C83B9715AFB55D31F53"><enum>(2)</enum><text>an established College of Nursing;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H57B56E62EC12415F9532DB794AE4F776"><enum>(3)</enum><text>a burgeoning School of Marine and Environmental Sciences adjacent to the Mobile-Tensaw Delta and the Gulf of Mexico;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HD197EB8046C64DDB894DB74885B25450"><enum>(4)</enum><text>a comprehensive College of Engineering; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HA1A2F053BAF4419DA4569253E92ACB55"><enum>(5)</enum><text>programs in business, computing, education, the sciences, and humanities;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the University of South Alabama is dedicated to supporting the academic success of student-athletes while striving for on-field success;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the University of South Alabama, a charter member of the Sun Belt Conference, is composed of 17 Division I men’s and women’s programs, including football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, tennis, golf, cross country, and track and field; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the University of South Alabama has distinguished itself by producing alumni who have excelled in various sectors, including research, medicine, business, education, engineering, the sciences, the arts, and athletics, among others: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="HCC8488EB5A184E978CC2335E08B58589"><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="H79FB206384D24FD6BCE624BB208A468A"><enum/><text>That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="H6C8BD35A8AC84E1EA6599AC0BD863A94"><enum>(1)</enum><text>commends the University of South Alabama on the occasion of its 60th anniversary and its years of service to the State of Alabama and the United States;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HE9A6CF21BF3A41B7B5DDE6F22411EB57"><enum>(2)</enum><text>recognizes the University of South Alabama for its education, research, and health care service as the flagship of the Gulf Coast; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HB9AA448F8FB44A3CBBB7FE871675E3BE"><enum>(3)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">respectfully requests that the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit an enrolled copy of this resolution to—</text><subparagraph id="HA52B6C20676244B6A8CE0BB2692761DF"><enum>(A)</enum><text>the President of the University of South Alabama, the Honorable Jo Bonner;</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="H13C6C3A651DC4EECA1667474C31EB95F"><enum>(B)</enum><text>the Executive Vice President and Provost of the University of South Alabama, Dr. Andrea Kent;</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="HC49EDA7490594334A1CB62147222F92A"><enum>(C)</enum><text>the Dean of the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine and Vice President for Medical Affairs at the University of South Alabama, Dr. John Marymont;</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="HBF1FC8295F7A4549A6AC75B11D5BDB8D"><enum>(D)</enum><text>the Chief Executive Officer and Senior Associate Vice President for Medical Affairs at USA Health, Mr. Owen Bailey; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="HD4DCE4FEF6D748C6925CA00BC32650D5"><enum>(E)</enum><text>the Director of Athletics of the University of South Alabama, Dr. Joel Erdmann.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
