which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Expressing support for the designation of June 7, 2024, as <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Day</quote> and June 2024 as <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Month</quote>.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas each year in the United States more than—</text><paragraph id="H29CD769F888D472996B0A0D05423374C"><enum>(1)</enum><text>44,000 individuals are killed and 88,000 individuals are wounded by gunfire;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H1A57CFCE147E4B42828372E09CD15289"><enum>(2)</enum><text>close to 18,000 individuals are killed in homicides involving guns;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HD342F85DF2884AECAEF988E05F0FBFAD"><enum>(3)</enum><text>25,000 individuals die by suicide using a gun; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HE65BFFE5FFF5459C8CF55C18089BF8E2"><enum>(4)</enum><text>500 individuals are killed in unintentional shootings;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, since 1968, more individuals have died from guns in the United States than have died on the battlefields of all the wars in the history of the United States;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas 2023 was a deadly year for the United States, with an estimated 18,800 people killed in gun homicides or nonsuicide-related shootings;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in 2023, unintentional shootings by children surpassed 400 incidents for the first time ever, resulting in nearly 160 deaths annually;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, by one count, in 2023 in the United States, there were 656 mass-shooting incidents in which at least 4 people were killed or wounded by gunfire;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas nationwide, 87,000 military veterans died by gun suicide from 2002 to 2021;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, every year in the United States, nearly 4,000 children and teens are killed by gun violence and 21,000 children and teens are shot and wounded;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, approximately 9,400 people in the United States under the age of 25 die because of gun violence annually, including Hadiya Pendleton, who, in 2013, was killed at 15 years of age in Chicago, Illinois, while standing in a park;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, on June 7, 2024, to recognize the 27th birthday of Hadiya Pendleton (born June 2, 1997), people across the United States will recognize <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Day</quote> and wear orange in tribute to—</text><paragraph id="H0D15A7E81FD4409BA4BF9A64D2148418"><enum>(1)</enum><text>Hadiya Pendleton and other victims of gun violence; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H09137A57725A4B20BF68F32C450F9C90"><enum>(2)</enum><text>the loved ones of those victims; and</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas June 2024, is an appropriate month to designate as <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Month</quote>: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="HC34A269F928E481EBD95438E25E22B6C"><section id="H4DE88655A39F45A2ADF5C36C4FF98615" section-type="undesignated-section" display-inline="yes-display-inline"><enum/><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="H52F9AD613FCA41E19B6DCD9ED4616570"><enum>(1)</enum><text>supports—</text><subparagraph id="H25B1C99D6583426EB16B723BE813F119"><enum>(A)</enum><text>the designation of <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Month</quote> and the goals and ideals of that month; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="H1203533FE1E44EC4B8FBA0D22BA8C2BD"><enum>(B)</enum><text>the designation of <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Day</quote>, in remembrance of the victims of gun violence; and</text></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="H31494FF0F73B430AA75243A34CE5FBDA"><enum>(2)</enum><text>calls on the people of the United States to—</text><subparagraph id="H9798A998E9944748A8D537AD7C118162"><enum>(A)</enum><text>promote greater awareness of gun violence and gun safety;</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="H2B731055810241F08D25387256B1BE81"><enum>(B)</enum><text>wear orange, the color that hunters wear to show that they are not targets, on <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Day</quote>;</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="HE776896D8CEF4C39858F6D8F44471CBA"><enum>(C)</enum><text>concentrate heightened attention on gun violence during the summer months, when gun violence typically increases; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="HB718688BEA0C4018BA2F110186D7809D"><enum>(D)</enum><text>bring community members and leaders together to discuss ways to make communities safer.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
