<whereas><text>Whereas a co-occurring disorder, also known as dual diagnosis, is the condition of having a mental illness and a comorbid substance use disorder;</text></whereas> <whereas><text>Whereas, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, approximately 21,500,000 adults in the United States have a co-occurring disorder;</text></whereas> 
<whereas><text>Whereas people with mental illness are more likely to experience a substance use disorder than those not affected by a mental illness;</text></whereas> <whereas><text>Whereas no specific combinations of mental and substance use disorders are defined uniquely as co-occurring disorders;</text></whereas> 
<whereas><text>Whereas the presence of two or more disorders can complicate diagnosis and treatment;</text></whereas> <whereas><text>Whereas integrating both screening and treatment for mental and substance use disorders leads to a better quality of care and health outcomes for those living with co-occurring disorders by treating the whole person;</text></whereas> 
<whereas><text>Whereas increased awareness leads to earlier detection; and</text></whereas> <whereas><text>Whereas early detection and integrated treatment can together improve outcomes and quality of life for people with co-occurring disorders: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="HF5819AF29D834687A853CA952B6FB758"> 
<section id="H0017C03A1463403DAA18F701F1D93AC0" section-type="undesignated-section" display-inline="yes-display-inline"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text> <paragraph id="HDA8342B30B734AA78D0BDD36173E161B"><enum>(1)</enum><text>expresses support for the designation of <quote>Co-Occurring Disorders Awareness Month</quote>; and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H1646FA02FAC44DFFAF1C0A5090596875"><enum>(2)</enum><text>recognizes the importance of—</text> <subparagraph id="HCD251C0C400C465796237064F0D27ADF"><enum>(A)</enum><text>improving awareness;</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="HD3DA928448AA476BA4EC95C424094CB3"><enum>(B)</enum><text>advancing research; and</text></subparagraph> <subparagraph id="H83CB3F0F411A45D79BBFBD538104CA9C"><enum>(C)</enum><text>developing new treatments and diagnostics for co-occurring disorders.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></section>
