<section id="H72222D4B58194BAFBB1A93BD6E17AFE1" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as <quote><short-title>Mel’s Law</short-title></quote>.</text></section> <section id="HA6FB64A2F59D4A17BDF4100BCD659BFD"><enum>2.</enum><header>Requirement to award posthumous degrees</header> <subsection id="HB0AB8639BE5B46F789528759353E9FD3"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Posthumous degrees</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 487(a) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/1094">20 U.S.C. 1094(a)</external-xref>) is amended by adding at the end the following:</text> 
<quoted-block style="OLC" id="H7F0A70C2548149FC8FE1011CA480D05E" display-inline="no-display-inline"> 
<paragraph id="HC63FAF15BDB84276A5243C64E821FBBA"><enum>(30)</enum><text>The institution certifies that the institution has established a policy to award posthumous degrees to deceased students who—</text> <subparagraph id="H5327B13F884C4ED29A75448FF3556A6F"><enum>(A)</enum><text>had been enrolled in a degree program at the institution;</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="HC7990C5B25CC4869BC3E4A3F86A9CC0A"><enum>(B)</enum><text>died prior to completing such program; and</text></subparagraph> <subparagraph id="HC45142A1571541819118E878C817FEC5"><enum>(C)</enum><text>at the time of death, were in academic standing consistent with the requirements for graduation from such program, as determined by the institution.</text></subparagraph> </paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection> 
<subsection id="H1C05D447F10E4419874481073DE2D73A"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Accreditation criteria</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 496(a) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/1099b">20 U.S.C. 1099b(a)</external-xref>) is amended—</text> <paragraph id="H5E8DD03FBE0044C695CF12A2C987BE52"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by redesignating paragraphs (6) through (8) as paragraphs (7) through (9), respectively; and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H780B368BF56840D486C771F1EEEC8BE8"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by inserting after paragraph (5) the following:</text> <quoted-block style="OLC" id="HE4FF0091AE1642EE89AFFB1226B5E09A" display-inline="no-display-inline"> <paragraph id="HFEE872DC9FB94BA48EE5607C4979D851"><enum>(6)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">the standards for accreditation of the agency or association do not take into consideration the number of posthumous degrees awarded by the institution to deceased students;</text></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></subsection> 
<subsection id="H559EBE6249F648AA8A94BFF4448D8E3B"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The amendments made by this Act shall take effect on the date that is 1 year after the date of enactment of this Act. </text></subsection></section> </legis-body></bill>
