R. 8292</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20240508">May 8, 2024</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S001195">Mr. Smith of Missouri</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="B001260">Mr. Buchanan</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S001172">Mr. Smith of Nebraska</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="K000376">Mr. Kelly of Pennsylvania</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S001183">Mr. Schweikert</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="L000585">Mr. LaHood</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="W000815">Mr. Wenstrup</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="A000375">Mr. Arrington</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="F000465">Mr. Ferguson</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="E000298">Mr. Estes</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S001199">Mr. Smucker</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="H001082">Mr. Hern</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="M001205">Mrs. Miller of West Virginia</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="M001210">Mr. Murphy</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="K000392">Mr. Kustoff</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="F000466">Mr. Fitzpatrick</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S001214">Mr. Steube</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="T000478">Ms. Tenney</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="F000470">Mrs. Fischbach</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="M001213">Mr. Moore of Utah</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S001135">Mrs. Steel</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="V000134">Ms. Van Duyne</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="F000446">Mr. Feenstra</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="M000317">Ms. Malliotakis</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="C001126">Mr. Carey</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HWM00">Committee on Ways and Means</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to increase penalties for unauthorized disclosure of taxpayer information.</official-title></form><legis-body id="HCB674484A1A745B9AF4F5F16E34D3BCE" style="OLC"><section id="H5E0C65A632344B7BAB84346CFF9F75DE" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Taxpayer Data Protection Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="HA2699255D66B4A29914B24A781C98714"><enum>2.</enum><header>Increase in penalties for unauthorized disclosures of taxpayer information</header><subsection id="H6A5AD0306A3B48349435582A8B7D6793"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text>Paragraphs (1), (2), (3), (4), and (5) of <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/26/7213">section 7213(a)</external-xref> of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 are each amended by striking <quote>$5,000, or imprisonment of not more than 5 years</quote> and inserting <quote>$250,000, or imprisonment of not more than 10 years</quote>.</text></subsection><subsection id="H21AA093F7C064FABBD332DCA805F2EF1"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Disclosures affecting multiple taxpayers treated as multiple violations</header><text>Section 7213(a) of such Code is amended by adding at the end the following new paragraph:</text><quoted-block style="OLC" id="H94961EA02BAE4F27AF06C0F9C47F01D1" display-inline="no-display-inline"><paragraph id="H8C99613942DD4A0DB80173A745A3F409"><enum>(6)</enum><header>Disclosures affecting multiple taxpayers treated as multiple violations</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">For purposes of paragraphs (1), (2), (3), (4), and (5), any violation of any such paragraph which affects more than 1 taxpayer shall be treated as a separate violation with respect to each such taxpayer.</text></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection><subsection id="H809B70C65814435CA3871830A689B399"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text>The amendments made by this subsection shall apply to disclosures made after the date of the enactment of this Act. </text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
