R. 7969</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20240411">April 11, 2024</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="T000478">Ms. Tenney</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To amend title 18, United States Code, to provide that the period during which a former Member of Congress is prohibited from lobbying shall begin upon the expiration of the term for which the Member was elected.</official-title></form><legis-body id="HB4B5CDB61A7E4E20AEE080B26AE8E694" style="OLC"><section id="HC5F5F545D2C44F39B33A374B9C0FD4E8" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Don’t Quit to Lobby Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="H83F4A8B9903C4972A408B63F57F79C87"><enum>2.</enum><header>Commencement of period during which former Members of Congress are prohibited from lobbying</header><subsection id="H8B76BD613E3745209CBA8803222AE941"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Commencement upon expiration of term</header><paragraph id="H85C2AA70A83A430BA5748BF019C8D14C"><enum>(1)</enum><header>Senators</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 207(e)(1)(A) of title 18, United States Code, is amended by striking <quote>within 2 years after that person leaves office</quote> and inserting <quote>within 2 years after the expiration of the term for which the person was elected or appointed</quote>.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H6B4B2FE8D7A94A78B826803E13ECE482"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Members of the House</header><text>Section 207(e)(1)(B) of such title is amended by striking <quote>within 1 year after that person leaves office</quote> and inserting <quote>within 1 year after that person leaves office or, in the case of a Member, within 1 year after the expiration of the term for which the Member was elected</quote>.</text></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="H761477E70BE94B4FAAC60B938C4B2D23"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text>The amendments made by subsection (a) shall apply with respect to an individual who leaves the office of Senator or Representative in, or Delegate or Resident Commissioner to, the Congress on or after the date of the enactment of this Act.</text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
