R. 7303</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20240207">February 7, 2024</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="V000133">Mr. Van Drew</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="H001086">Mrs. Harshbarger</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="M001212">Mr. Moore of Alabama</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="C001054">Mr. Carl</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HII00">Committee on Natural Resources</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To abolish the Board on Geographic Names and repeal the provisions of the Act of July 25, 1947 establishing such Board.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H3AA44A38E3E24F21AC63FCB3CEA79A06" style="OLC"><section id="HE30685DA94F54DEBB66585D09DAE0932" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Preserve Geographic Names Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="H8EFB23DE53654A869214A85A8A0D4DA2" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header>Abolition of Board on Geographic Names</header><subsection id="H5A0EE46E95E142908736690E791423AF"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The Board on Geographic Names established by section 2 of the Act of July 25, 1947 (61 Stat. 456; <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/43/364a">43 U.S.C. 364a</external-xref>), is abolished and all functions of such Board are terminated.</text></subsection><subsection id="H063FF941D620456EB71836FE16A7CF71"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Conforming amendments</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The Act of July 25, 1947 (61 Stat. 456; <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/43/364">43 U.S.C. 364 et seq.</external-xref>) is amended—</text><paragraph id="H937A33D62D3F45A8A39B06444AF810EC"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in the first section of that Act—</text><subparagraph id="HA1D0430DBD9B4269A43D2412C0A90DB5"><enum>(A)</enum><text>by striking <quote>conjointly with the Board on Geographic Names, as hereinafter provided,</quote>; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="H855410F164634B039EE8A1914FE8D33F"><enum>(B)</enum><text>by striking <quote>, except that such authority as relates to the final approval or review of actions of the Board on Geographic Names shall be exercised by him, or his Under or Assistant Secretaries</quote>;</text></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="H0E1B5665E0E9434A985F021B20C23E7F"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by striking sections 2 and 3 and redesignating sections 4 through 8 as sections 2 through 6, respectively;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H1BDF10D245194FC899FB7C44C48F3BF2"><enum>(3)</enum><text>in section 2, as so redesignated by paragraph (2) of this subsection—</text><subparagraph id="H5C48276CB50F4E5A83FBA6A64816CDD3"><enum>(A)</enum><text>by striking <quote>, and he shall provide a place of meeting and staff assistance to the Board. The staff shall be responsible to the Secretary, who shall prescribe its relations to the Board and the committees of the Board</quote>; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="H8C08DFE204CB496CA059308038C9ADF2"><enum>(B)</enum><text>by striking <quote>, upon the recommendation of the Board,</quote>;</text></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="HA88FC911C4084B4DABDDDF3594FF7478"><enum>(4)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">in section 3, as so redesignated by paragraph (2) of this subsection, by striking <quote>in the name of the Board</quote>; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H05DF646CD10B4B4CA15B1A77ECFE498B"><enum>(5)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">in section 4, as so redesignated by paragraph (2) of this subsection, by striking <quote>, and the duties of said Board are transferred to the Board herein created, and all departments, bureaus, and agencies of the Federal Government shall refer all geographic names and problems to the said Board for the purpose of eliminating duplication of work, personnel, and authority</quote>.</text></paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
