R. 272</legis-num><associated-doc role="report">[Report No. 118–298]</associated-doc><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20240507">May 7, 2024</action-date><action-desc>Received; read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSGA00">Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs</committee-name></action-desc></action><action stage="Reported-in-Senate"><action-date date="20241216">December 16, 2024</action-date><action-desc>Reported by <sponsor name-id="S380">Mr. Peters</sponsor>, without amendment</action-desc></action><legis-type>AN ACT</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To amend title 31, United States Code, to authorize transportation for Government astronauts returning from space between their residence and various locations, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body id="HF479E6F2902A45998D91ADBBBCD7F74A" style="OLC"><section id="H703B206D70E64133906421D0963BDBA1" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Astronaut Safe Temporary Ride Options Act</short-title></quote> or the <quote><short-title>ASTRO Act</short-title></quote>. </text></section><section id="HF43A1251E8EB44C0A9CDAF54981AD83A"><enum>2.</enum><header>Transportation of astronauts returning from space</header><subsection id="H0611963303E148728AFD0C1DA75AE2D7"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 1344(a)(2) of title 31, United States Code, is amended—</text><paragraph id="HFA9A525502384017994AFFB82982B49D"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in subparagraph (A), by striking <quote>or</quote> at the end;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H7F7BABD3FA0D4C5BB9EA691A5511EE15"><enum>(2)</enum><text>in subparagraph (B), by inserting <quote>or</quote> after the comma at the end; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H641361842CB044E7B1568881A0660918"><enum>(3)</enum><text>by inserting before the matter following subparagraph (B) the following:</text><quoted-block style="USC" id="H5C72945767AB43E395A2E15D08A6CCB3" display-inline="no-display-inline"><subparagraph id="H8E1E3148E2094EFDAA269B4403D1266E" indent="up1"><enum>(C)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">necessary for post-flight transportation of Government astronauts, and others subject to reimbursable arrangements, returning from space for the performance of medical research, monitoring, diagnosis, or treatment, or other official duties, prior to receiving post-flight medical clearance to operate a motor vehicle,</text></subparagraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="H81AD8E78B6534CA9BFF9E67A1F9256CE" commented="no"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Report</header><paragraph id="HA1E6634F3C7B4156B80431260B5D207B"><enum>(1)</enum><header>In general</header><text>Not later than one year after the date of enactment of this Act and annually thereafter, the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration shall submit an annual report to Congress on the use of the authority providing transportation under subparagraph (C) of section 1344(a)(2) of title 31, United States Code (as added by subsection (a) of this Act). </text></paragraph><paragraph id="H51DA8995B93243E282C33E858A0ECB2F"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Contents</header><text>Any such report shall include the name of any individual who received such transportation, the number of instances such transportation was provided, and the total cost of such transportation for the year preceding the date such report is submitted.</text></paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body><endorsement><action-date date="20241216">December 16, 2024</action-date><action-desc>Reported without amendment</action-desc></endorsement></bill>
