<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>118th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 1818</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20230606">June 6, 2023</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S345">Mr. Johnson</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSEV00">Committee on Environment and Public Works</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To amend title 23, United States Code, to require the Secretary of Transportation to waive vehicle weight limitations for certain logging vehicles, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body style="OLC" display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause" id="HE7C8CA578F164D65A8F06CBABE3652BF"><section section-type="section-one" id="HF8222244C2E6484C838DBFAF637807DA"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Safe Routes Act of 2023</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="HFAF8019B27D84A2C8E4ACD84F909D39A"><enum>2.</enum><header>Vehicle weight exemption for certain logging vehicles</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 127 of title 23, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following:</text><quoted-block style="USC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="HC833D1C3231C44B6996D15A0A0DB2228"><subsection id="HC9852916A684470C8BD21D792233B4A5"><enum>(x)</enum><header>Certain logging vehicles</header><paragraph id="idB3404E4F9E404EB3AA96FEF9F57B5C03"><enum>(1)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The Secretary shall waive, for a covered logging vehicle, the application of any vehicle weight limit established under this section.</text></paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id34147DE7314A4198BCCF5B456BC93029"><enum>(2)</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Application of weight tolerances</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The waiver under this subsection shall only apply with respect to a State legal weight tolerance in effect on the date of enactment of this subsection.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H7487513D41AA465395506936B8F1CB1F"><enum>(3)</enum><header>Definition of covered logging vehicle</header><text>In this subsection, the term <term>covered logging vehicle</term> means a vehicle that—</text><subparagraph id="H5EFEC04B711447B8B819B5633CB266B9"><enum>(A)</enum><text>is transporting raw or unfinished forest products, including logs, pulpwood, biomass, or wood chips;</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="HC6418BD65FAC4CAABDBE80064C910FB6"><enum>(B)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">is traveling a distance of not more than 150 air miles on the Interstate System from the point of origin to a storage or processing facility; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="HC2294DD7EEB94D67A670D94CC868289F"><enum>(C)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">meets applicable State legal weight tolerances and vehicle configurations for transporting raw or unfinished forest products within the boundaries of each State in which the vehicle is operating.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></subsection><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></section></legis-body></bill>
