R. 6574</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20231204">December 4, 2023</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="G000579">Mr. Gallagher</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to clarify the contempt authority of immigration judges, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H87CC207230C24A91B84AA1E43BE6FD4F" style="OLC"><section id="HA6F95A1D6B994C9CB3AA53B664111C21" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Empowering Immigration Courts Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="HFC38C9BE27344F41A1576BF8F2F0CF44"><enum>2.</enum><header>Contempt authority of immigration judges</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 240(b)(1) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/8/1229a">8 U.S.C. 1229a(b)(1)</external-xref>) is amended by striking <quote>(under regulations prescribed by the Attorney General) to sanction by civil money penalty any action (or inaction) in contempt of the judge's proper exercise of authority under this Act</quote> and inserting <quote>to sanction by fine contempt of its authority in accordance with section 401 of title 18, United States Code</quote>.</text></section></legis-body></bill>
