Scott Franklin of Florida</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S001214">Mr. Steube</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="C001039">Mrs. Cammack</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="R000609">Mr. Rutherford</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="W000823">Mr. Waltz</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HGO00">Committee on Oversight and Reform</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Expressing the profound sorrow of the House of Representatives for the victims of the collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominium building in Surfside, Florida.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas in the early morning of June 24, 2021, the 40-year-old Champlain Towers South residential condominium building with approximately 130 units in Surfside, Florida, partially collapsed, leading to deaths and injuries of residents and the permanent evacuation of those in the portion of the building still standing;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas confirming the gravity of the catastrophe, the President issued an emergency declaration for the State of Florida on June 25, 2021, authorizing the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate the response and recovery effort and to supplement State and local resources;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas first responders and emergency response professionals at the Federal, State, and local levels responded to the tragedy, searching the wreckage for survivors and remains of deceased residents and worked to reunite families;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas countless generous volunteers, charitable organizations, and individual donors have contributed to support the Surfside community;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas while dozens of Champlain Towers South residents were thankfully reunified with friends and family, 98 people tragically lost their lives in the collapse;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas survivors, victims’ friends and family, first responders, and members of the local community have experienced severe emotional trauma, as many have lost loved ones, homes, pets, or cherished personal belongings; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Congress provided the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) with $22,000,000 to initiate a technical investigation into the causes of the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominiums and the inquiry is ongoing: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="HD32C1FF190794510B3C1D9D21DD1CC53"><section id="HC1C7B34C2FA14091BD69467B0D6B04D6" section-type="undesignated-section" display-inline="yes-display-inline"><enum/><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="HD8DAD03F474949E2B8AB9BF69BCA29A7"><enum>(1)</enum><text>honors the memory of the deceased;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H75A4169D80A547DDA62A3669ABB13D7C"><enum>(2)</enum><text>offers deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to all residents and to the families and friends of deceased and injured residents;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HEEB5AF468A2544B8BC99097BC8DB0312"><enum>(3)</enum><text>sends sincere gratitude to the first responders and emergency response professionals assisting the Surfside community, and acknowledges the need for continued aid to the victims and the broader community; </text></paragraph><paragraph id="H46E7F5B0749A4AE893A5ED04539D6E4F"><enum>(4)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">encourages flexibility and cooperation between creditors and survivors to ensure appropriate relief; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H601EFF8E23E24FC0B6A0B3226ED94135"><enum>(5)</enum><text>supports the investigation into the causes of the Champlain Towers South building collapse, and is committed to supporting efforts to prevent future high-rise building collapses.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
