<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>117th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 696</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20210310">March 10, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S385">Ms. Cortez Masto</sponsor> (for herself, <cosponsor name-id="S401">Mr. Romney</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S338">Mr. Manchin</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="S343">Mr. Boozman</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSEG00">Committee on Energy and Natural Resources</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To amend the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000 to allow counties to use certain funds to provide or expand access to broadband telecommunications services and other technologies.</official-title></form><legis-body display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause"><section section-type="section-one" id="S1"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Connected Rural Schools Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="id2D579835F60D4E399E9E4D14BCCC5195"><enum>2.</enum><header>Access to broadband and other technology</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 302(a) of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/16/7142">16 U.S.C. 7142(a)</external-xref>) is amended—</text><paragraph id="id7B2125535AB94E7198A010E5FAC6E3FA"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in paragraph (3), by striking <quote>and</quote> at the end;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id23499A301E3F4BFE9DD8BA877882FD34"><enum>(2)</enum><text>in paragraph (4), by striking the period at the end and inserting <quote>; and</quote>; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id78B7E1CB36144FB488CB1AA99128081E"><enum>(3)</enum><text>by adding at the end the following:</text><quoted-block style="OLC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id7B351CA803DC4716ACF0E5C527C64116"><paragraph id="id18F6501D00EE44F4A88423E2DCB8C8E7"><enum>(5)</enum><text>to provide or expand access to—</text><subparagraph id="id91E955739FB3493EB333C9B4281A4440"><enum>(A)</enum><text>broadband telecommunications services at local schools; or</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="id5953BB774E8E4FB4A6A61E8F95B6C6AC"><enum>(B)</enum><text>the technology and connectivity necessary for students to use a digital learning tool at or outside of a local school campus.</text></subparagraph></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></section></legis-body></bill>
