<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>117th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 1850</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20210526">May 26, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S415">Mr. Warnock</sponsor> (for himself and <cosponsor name-id="S343">Mr. Boozman</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSVA00">Committee on Veterans' Affairs</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To preserve the memorials to chaplains at Arlington National Cemetery, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body><section id="S1" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Chaplains Memorial Preservation Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="id32DA57772AF445418584A7679E15F4EA"><enum>2.</enum><header>Preservation of memorials to chaplains on Chaplains Hill at Arlington National Cemetery</header><subsection id="idFBBD7521D4704B37B3C0431C744E3E30"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Updates to memorials</header><text>The National Conference on Ministry to the Armed Forces, or any successor organization recognized in law for purposes of this Act, may, at no cost to the Federal Government—</text><paragraph id="id30196D3942344221B87A9CBDB99E8BCF"><enum>(1)</enum><subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="yes-display-inline" id="id0202FDE02A4C45749D51D90DD109CC80"><enum>(A)</enum><text>update the memorial to Protestant chaplains located in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia, with a granite, marble, or other stone base to host the bronze plaque of the memorial; </text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="idF3438843F1DD43748172960F104B92F6" indent="up1"><enum>(B)</enum><text>add an additional plaque to such base that includes the name of each chaplain, verified as described in subsection (b), who died while on active duty since the original memorial was placed; and </text></subparagraph><subparagraph indent="up1" id="id5B75020D5C374949ABA0F7BAF25B527C"><enum>(C)</enum><text>make such other updates and corrections to the memorial as may from time to time be needed as determined by the National Conference on Ministry to the Armed Forces or such successor organization; and</text></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="id6650B9B1DA9645C98F7C0AFC04D93CE0"><enum>(2)</enum><text>make such updates and corrections to the memorial to Catholic chaplains and the memorial to Jewish chaplains located in Arlington National Cemetery as may from time to time be needed as determined by the National Conference on Ministry to the Armed Forces or such successor organization. </text></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="id44637E81D8484C33972F70852CECFE8E"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Verification of names</header><text>The National Conference on Ministry to the Armed Forces, or any successor organization recognized in law for purposes of this Act, may verify with the Chief of Chaplains of the Army, the Chief of Chaplains of the Navy, the Chief of Chaplains for the Air Force and the Space Force, and such agencies of the Department of Defense as the Secretary of the Army considers appropriate, the names of chaplains for memorialization in Arlington National Cemetery. </text></subsection><subsection id="idACEA37B7248449FE844570B2037BB2A8"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Rule of construction</header><text>Nothing in this Act may be construed as authorizing the expansion of any monument or memorial that is located in Arlington National Cemetery as of the date of the enactment of this Act. </text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
