RES. 661</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20210920">September 20, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="J000126">Ms. Johnson of Texas</sponsor> submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HIF00">Committee on Energy and Commerce</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Expressing support for designation of the week of September 19, 2021, through September 25, 2021, as <quote>Balance Awareness Week</quote>.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas vestibular (inner ear balance) disorders are underdiagnosed and undertreated;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas as many as 35 percent of adults 40 years of age and older in the United States, approximately 69,000,000 people have experienced some form of vestibular dysfunction;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas 80 percent of people 65 years of age and older have experienced dizziness;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas dizziness is one of the most common symptoms in patients 25 years and older;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas dizziness accounts for 2.6 percent of all primary care visits and nearly 2.5 percent of emergency department visits;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas vestibular disorder patients may consult four or more physicians and spend 50 months or more in the search for a diagnosis;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Vestibular Disorders Association celebrates <quote>Balance Awareness Week</quote> to reduce the time it takes to diagnose a vestibular disorder by helping patients recognize their symptoms and encouraging them to seek help from a qualified vestibular specialist; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the week of September 19, 2021, through September 25, 2021, would be an appropriate week to designate as <quote>Balance Awareness Week</quote>: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="H29C0F74F5EEA418695734B9C2C9F5188"><section id="HAA3986F2024341B1B50C848BE53BA005" section-type="undesignated-section" display-inline="yes-display-inline"><enum/><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="H7BB70C80AE844EE7A7AB73AA80A96000"><enum>(1)</enum><text>supports the designation of <quote>Balance Awareness Week</quote>; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HC9892C9D7C9D4FF0BF42D3BBAAA3BCFD"><enum>(2)</enum><text>recognizes the importance of raising public awareness about vestibular disorders.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
