R. 3677</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20210601">June 1, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="R000602">Miss Rice of New York</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HPW00">Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To direct the Secretary of Transportation to establish a distracted driving education grant program, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H700ACD2D8D65476EAD4865ED7C4FA01B" style="OLC"><section id="H74D192734C76465D86BC7EE36D1AD83E" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Distracted Driving Education Act of 2021</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="HE9D8AF73B3E44DC3BE80C52409C58627"><enum>2.</enum><header>Distracted driving education grant program</header><subsection id="H9CB3703BA6014889A11F5D10133E950D"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Establishment</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Not later than October 1, 2022, the Secretary of Transportation shall establish a distracted driving education grant program.</text></subsection><subsection id="HB8E45F7B681F4F55B7513B65BCFBA1BA"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Grant authority</header><text>In carrying out the program established under subsection (a), the Secretary may make grants, on a competitive basis, to nonprofit organizations.</text></subsection><subsection id="HAD8F20395A17447698C9BAEB278132D3"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Eligible projects</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">A grant made under subsection (b) shall be used to provide education to the public regarding the risks of distracted driving, including texting or otherwise using a personal wireless communications device while driving.</text></subsection><subsection id="H4E54F59CA51A40EA886DD633BE9E9731"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Applications</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">To be eligible for a grant made under subsection (b), a nonprofit organization shall submit to the Secretary an application in such form, at such time, and containing such information as the Secretary determines appropriate.</text></subsection><subsection commented="no" id="H0D4936793F154956870948AAEB06ED08"><enum>(e)</enum><header>Authorization of appropriations</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">There is authorized to be appropriated to the Secretary to make grants under subsection (b) $5,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2023 and 2024.</text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
