RES. 977</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20200522">May 22, 2020</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="K000385">Ms. Kelly of Illinois</sponsor> submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Expressing support for the designation of June 5, 2020, as <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Day</quote> and June 2020 as <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Month</quote>.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas each year in the United States, more than—</text><paragraph id="H0C2A272008BF46D88A9439C7A7CB12E9"><enum>(1)</enum><text>37,500 individuals are killed and 73,300 individuals are wounded by gunfire;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H487761D6D99D41D99DC631F8E42228AB"><enum>(2)</enum><text>13,300 individuals are killed in homicides involving firearms;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H6C7A73AD09634E45B4EB9E36575C3232"><enum>(3)</enum><text>22,900 individuals die by suicide using a firearm; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HCEC46692A2914231AA134FA5C522378B"><enum>(4)</enum><text>470 individuals are killed in unintentional shootings;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, since 1968, more individuals have died from guns in the United States than have died on the battlefields of all the wars in the history of the United States;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas by 1 count, in 2019 in the United States, there were 417 mass shooting incidents in which not fewer than 4 people were killed or wounded by gunfire;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in 2019 in the United States, there were at least 130 incidents of gunfire on school grounds, resulting in 33 deaths and 77 injuries;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas every year in the United States, approximately 3,000 children and teens are killed by gun violence, and 13,000 children and teens are shot and wounded;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas approximately 7,600 people in the United States under the age of 25 die because of gun violence annually, including Hadiya Pendleton, who, in 2013, was killed at 15 years of age in Chicago, Illinois, while standing in a park;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the deadly toll of daily gun violence has continued even during the COVID–19 pandemic;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, on June 5, 2020, to recognize the 23d birthday of Hadiya Pendleton (born June 2, 1997), people across the United States will recognize <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Day</quote> and wear orange in tribute to—</text><paragraph id="H60472C05EAF04C63829D0B2D5035C070"><enum>(1)</enum><text>Hadiya Pendleton and other victims of gun violence; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H3C348D032EB9412D960F137819658B37"><enum>(2)</enum><text>the loved ones of those victims; and</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas June 2020 is an appropriate month to designate as <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Month</quote>: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="H10762EBCE9464CF0AC68554E9B28F66E"><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="H4A9F378A34434E1BBE3A13A25DFD8794"><enum/><text>That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="H08266C81A9534F45BE3018C1ED9E5974"><enum>(1)</enum><text>supports—</text><subparagraph id="H3B4BC9DBB30346D5970B48C91C3920A8"><enum>(A)</enum><text>the designation of <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Month</quote> and the goals and ideals of that month; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="HE87D8581E68D47C883BC5771C7CDB8C5"><enum>(B)</enum><text>the designation of <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Day</quote> in remembrance of the victims of gun violence; and</text></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="HBCBB7337CDBC4334BB2041C4B62146A6"><enum>(2)</enum><text>calls on the people of the United States to—</text><subparagraph id="HB08FB4A8EE05463683A52D8D3E009B50"><enum>(A)</enum><text>promote greater awareness of gun violence and gun safety;</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="HABB8415E79B84FDBAEEEEA2FC18642D8"><enum>(B)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">wear orange, the color that hunters wear to show that they are not targets, on <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Day</quote>;</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="H842D1B1845D54EAE936AB4CF79466E9B"><enum>(C)</enum><text>concentrate heightened attention on gun violence during the summer months, when gun violence typically increases; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="H0BD410A342C443C498C03E6AE667D174"><enum>(D)</enum><text>bring community members and leaders together to discuss ways to make communities safer.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
