RES. 957</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20200508">May 8, 2020</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="E000179">Mr. Engel</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="U000031">Mr. Upton</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="C001124">Mr. Cox of California</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="K000210">Mr. King of New York</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HIF00">Committee on Energy and Commerce</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Expressing support for the designation of May as <quote>National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month</quote>.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas 5,500,000 children in the United States, 7.5 percent, currently have asthma;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas 24,800,000, or one in 13 people in the United States, have asthma and the numbers are increasing each year;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in 2018, on average, children missed more than 7,900,000 days of school and adults missed 10,900,000 days of work because of asthma;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas asthma is the second most common noncommunicable disease among children;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas 1,700,000 individuals per year visit emergency departments because of asthma’s effects;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the total economic cost of asthma in the United States was $81,900,000,000 per year from 2008 to 2013;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas fewer than half of people with asthma report being given an asthma action plan, which is key to the prevention of asthma attacks;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas asthma is a manageable disease;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas those with moderate to severe asthma may be at a greater risk of developing serious complications as a result of COVID–19 during the current public health emergency; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas May would be an appropriate month to designate as <quote>National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month</quote>: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="H5DD46616A9FB4ECBBAAEDB3A9AF1919D"><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="H5946B32549F140538101F7BA76CB86C6"><enum/><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="HA855992A49E34FC0A9F9B37178982855"><enum>(1)</enum><text>supports the designation of <quote>National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month</quote>;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HE59B7E244A0B466EAF7125ADDB597ADD"><enum>(2)</enum><text>encourages awareness of the prevalence of asthma and allergies, including heightened prevalence among women, minority, and urban demographics;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H2A32B5ACC4C047F2A46051DBD4AB8B06"><enum>(3)</enum><text>recognizes and salutes health care professionals who treat asthma and allergy-related health issues;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HD4ECF68DE24E485284C7951A3F665733"><enum>(4)</enum><text>recognizes and salutes researchers working to identify asthma and allergy cures;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H3C51A12FF62A4E62A6CCBE5B2B91A89B"><enum>(5)</enum><text>recognizes and reaffirms commitment to public education about asthma and allergy treatment and symptoms and to advancing care for both asthma and allergy conditions; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HA13C797BE5074502B45CDD6F92B19BB2"><enum>(6)</enum><text>supports investment in researching the prevention, treatment, and eradication of asthma.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
