RES. 882</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20200302">March 2, 2020</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="U000031">Mr. Upton</sponsor> (for himself and <cosponsor name-id="B000490">Mr. Bishop of Georgia</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HAG00">Committee on Agriculture</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Recognizing the importance of the blueberry industry to the United States of America and supporting the designation of July 2020 as <quote>National Blueberry Month</quote>.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas blueberries are a native North American fruit, first used fresh and dried in food and medicines by Native Americans who introduced them to early colonists, which led to new uses and forms, including frozen, establishing traditions still observed today;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the pioneering work conducted in New Jersey by Elizabeth White and Dr. Frederick Coville, a Department of Agriculture botanist, in the early 1900s, to domesticate wild lowbush blueberries resulted in the development of the hybrid for cultivated highbush blueberries;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas because of these early efforts, highbush blueberries are large, sweet, juicy berries that can be commercially produced and shipped, allowing them to become an important United States agricultural industry;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas highbush blueberries have a harvested area estimated at more than 97,000 acres and are produced in 48 States by more than 14,000 growers and their families;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas highbush blueberry production in the United States has continually increased, with particular growth in the past two decades, to reach a harvest of 551,100,000 pounds in 2018;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas blueberries are low in fat, and a source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas blueberries are being studied to examine the role they may play in promoting good health in areas such as cardiovascular health, brain health, exercise, insulin response, and gut health; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas highbush blueberries are harvested in the United States from April through early September, with the harvest reaching its peak in July: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="H835449A3D91D40259918518E4B35718D"><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="HE7D72FA707004118B973F31FC8083A42"><enum/><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="H2BF76D209C9E40B6A2F447C96D6D4968"><enum>(1)</enum><text>supports the designation of <quote>National Blueberry Month</quote>;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H40B7846CFC9246DBB31A4F25FE971D65"><enum>(2)</enum><text>recognizes the contributions of American growers and their families; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HB207F8148FA84256A5341023350D0D15"><enum>(3)</enum><text>recognizes that purchasing American grown blueberries supports farmers, jobs, and the economy.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
