			 States as an <quote>American World War II Heritage City</quote>, and for other purposes.</official-title></form>

		<section id="HF23D89AE04D24A81B51A4C132A892263" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>American World War II Heritage Cities</header>
 <subsection id="HC04E804FBB994434BB47A143B4EC8F22"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Designation</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">In order to recognize and ensure the continued preservation and importance of the history of the United States involvement in World War II, each calendar year the Secretary of the Interior (referred to in this section as the <quote>Secretary</quote>) may designate not less than one city located in one of the several States or a territory of the United States as an <quote>American World War II Heritage City</quote>. Not more than one city in each State or territory may be designated under this section.</text>
 </subsection><subsection id="H366B35B5DBD94EA1BF4B9400C0EBEC95"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Application for designation</header><text>The Secretary shall—</text> <paragraph id="H6E64B145EC894E0A9489C3FC5438FD3C"><enum>(1)</enum><text>establish and publicize the process by which a city may apply for designation as an American World War II Heritage City based on the criteria in subsection (c); and</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="HDA543E0A3AAF4A55945993176DADDFB4"><enum>(2)</enum><text>encourage cities to apply for designation as an American World War II Heritage City.</text> </paragraph></subsection><subsection id="H5F3ADAC3AF6A40CBBE40885B98A8EBD1"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Criteria for designation</header><text>The Secretary, in consultation with the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution or the President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, shall make each designation under subsection (a) based on the following criteria:</text>
 <paragraph id="H2FC08CC74D3E4F21A4A72C88FEDC5D16"><enum>(1)</enum><text>Contributions by a city and its environs to the World War II home-front war effort, including contributions related to—</text>
 <subparagraph id="H451B548CAC984DF6B077BC16FA648E38"><enum>(A)</enum><text>defense manufacturing, such as ships, aircraft, uniforms, and equipment;</text> </subparagraph><subparagraph id="HB9E596500361480A937397B2EB5DF1CE"><enum>(B)</enum><text>production of foodstuffs and consumer items for Armed Forces and home consumption;</text>
 </subparagraph><subparagraph id="HF4A533F789C74E8DBD1F891A6A25766E"><enum>(C)</enum><text>war bond drives;</text> </subparagraph><subparagraph id="H8D159E8CFB61437491E146EDF229B7D5"><enum>(D)</enum><text>adaptations to wartime survival;</text>
 </subparagraph><subparagraph id="H4F082C62F0414A98AC030F04E5A931F0"><enum>(E)</enum><text>volunteer participation;</text> </subparagraph><subparagraph id="H75D26993DD184231A3ACA8DDEA9EA9FF"><enum>(F)</enum><text>civil defense preparedness;</text>
 </subparagraph><subparagraph id="H638B26C51EE24D85ABAE5B07F5DB65F7"><enum>(G)</enum><text>personnel serving in the Armed Forces, their achievements, and facilities for their rest and recreation; or</text>
 </subparagraph><subparagraph id="HB336DC9118E946BA9957B0E663FC3480"><enum>(H)</enum><text>the presence of Armed Forces camps, bases, airfields, harbors, repair facilities, and other installations within or in its environs.</text>
 </subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="H5EA58111EE524E5D8F67D1E8CBF72ACD"><enum>(2)</enum><text>Achievements by a city and its environs to preserve the heritage and legacy of the city’s contributions to the war effort and to preserve World War II history, including—</text>
 <subparagraph id="H77C92D542EFB483B8409BB8D83A835E0"><enum>(A)</enum><text>the identification, preservation, restoration, and interpretation of World War II related structures, facilities and sites;</text>
 </subparagraph><subparagraph id="H5A2B2D10FE6E45C0BC70E18DA9F6A5B6"><enum>(B)</enum><text>establishment of museums, parks, and markers;</text> </subparagraph><subparagraph id="H4DE8EB622C6849239B7B4C945DA9E5EA"><enum>(C)</enum><text>establishment of memorials to area men who lost their lives in service;</text>
 </subparagraph><subparagraph id="H47BDC3FBC73F4701BF01A2578B15CDCB"><enum>(D)</enum><text>organizing groups of veterans and home-front workers and their recognition;</text> </subparagraph><subparagraph id="H154E325F4D564C438BC66D937BB8E480"><enum>(E)</enum><text>presentation of cultural events such as dances, plays, and lectures;</text>
 </subparagraph><subparagraph id="HF67295018BD043AE8CC2AC52D382CFDB"><enum>(F)</enum><text>public relations outreach through the print and electronic media, and books; and</text> </subparagraph><subparagraph id="H077433F8E01D4EBCA7087696A5A898D6"><enum>(G)</enum><text>recognition and ceremonies remembering wartime event anniversaries.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
