<section id="H69498470E1464D38902818CCCFF5BC5C" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>School and Student Safety Act of 2018</short-title></quote>.</text> </section> <section id="HE37D410BDF584171BD8FE064F411DA80" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header>Public safety and community policing grant preference for applicants pri­or­i­tiz­ing the hiring of school resource officers</header> <subsection id="H257AD1B5341D4D2A860A117EE3A6C843"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Preference</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 1701(c) of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/34/10381">34 U.S.C. 10381(c)</external-xref>) is amended—</text> 
<paragraph id="HC7547CCAB4204CAEAE4DE9218A072D93"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in paragraph (2)(C), by striking <quote>or</quote> after the semicolon;</text> </paragraph> <paragraph id="H2023D74A301640EF9AF0E855C05C5ACE"><enum>(2)</enum><text>in paragraph (3)(B), by striking the period at the end and inserting <quote>; or</quote>; and</text> </paragraph>
<paragraph id="H7E7432050D0F4973A681BA57F6C5F2A2"><enum>(3)</enum><text>by adding at the end the following new paragraph:</text> <quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="HEE87193A4D414D0AA42074D4389392A8" style="OLC"> <paragraph id="HC6D61F4C4E4A4FC18DFCE8846D17044D"><enum>(4)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">from an applicant that prioritizes hiring new, additional career law enforcement officers for deployment as school resource officers and individuals for such positions who—</text> 
<subparagraph display-inline="no-display-inline" id="HEB3C822A0F9E4C8FBBD0F6932F54FC21"><enum>(A)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">are—</text> <clause display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H31EBFE29056A4D80BD0E6BB4445D91E9"><enum>(i)</enum><text>veterans (as defined in section 101 of title 38, United States Code); or</text> </clause>
<clause display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H83674488B1014ED7957706715C4A5A80"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>retired law enforcement officers who—</text> <subclause id="H23A6E00AB22445769BF5279279C5245A"><enum>(I)</enum><text>separated from service in good standing from service with a public agency as a career law enforcement officer; and</text> </subclause>
<subclause id="H50D6E9FC343B4DFD9A8E8C314FA58630"><enum>(II)</enum><text>before such separation, served as a career law enforcement officer for an aggregate of 10 years or more; and</text> </subclause></clause></subparagraph> <subparagraph id="HDC36F198679F437DAD1E710F6C17948F"><enum>(B)</enum><text>have not been officially found to be unqualified for a position as a career law enforcement officer for reasons relating to mental health by a medical professional in a medical profession determined by the Attorney General to be qualified to make such determinations.</text> </subparagraph></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block> </paragraph></subsection>
<subsection id="HE4F35115E94346E6872B076628C355D8"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Authorization of appropriations</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 1001(a)(11) of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/34/10261">34 U.S.C. 10261(a)(11)</external-xref>) is amended—</text> <paragraph id="HDDCE46FAB24845FEBF4F7CB230C3AD28"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in subparagraph (A), by striking the period at the end and inserting <quote>, and such sums as may be necessary to carry out part Q for fiscal year 2019 and each fiscal year thereafter.</quote>; and</text> </paragraph>
<paragraph id="H58885738CE544878812354124844CA2A"><enum>(2)</enum><text>in subparagraph (B), in the first sentence by striking the period at the end and inserting the following: <quote>, and 25 percent shall be made available for grants to State and local law enforcement agencies for the purposes described in section 1701(b)(12).</quote>.</text> </paragraph></subsection></section> </legis-body> </bill>
