			 engaged in activities related to legal proceedings from the definition of
			 a debt collector, to amend the Consumer Financial Protection Act of 2010
			 to prevent the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection from exercising
			 supervisory or enforcement authority with respect to attorneys when
			 undertaking certain actions related to legal proceedings, and for other
			 purposes.</official-title></form>
	<legis-body id="H1A95F531BE6340E0B831D1126DAD701B" style="OLC">
 <section id="HFDB793BF7DD440F5AA6BAB75E7DB97CC" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Practice of Law Technical Clarification Act of 2017</short-title></quote>.</text> </section><section id="H9596F4706E6E4337ABF7B41BCA4A43F0"><enum>2.</enum><header>Exclusion of law firms and lawyers from the definition of debt collector when engaged in the practice of law</header> <text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 803(6) of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/15/1692a">15 U.S.C. 1692a(6)</external-xref>) is amended—</text>
 <paragraph id="HB050377A49C54ACFA085751B82568812"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by redesignating subparagraph (F) as subparagraph (G);</text> </paragraph><paragraph id="H1B1BB338C68441059797C643AC6CE4BF"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by inserting after subparagraph (E) the following:</text>
				<quoted-block id="H00DCCCCDF18040E197F2ACF0A1069962" style="OLC">
 <subparagraph id="H2E0F565CB00E47FEA2C14F4D187CC96B"><enum>(F)</enum><text>any law firm or licensed attorney, to the extent that such firm or attorney is—</text> <clause id="H89679AEC803D4EA89697081F4CAB7E2B"><enum>(i)</enum><text>serving, filing, or conveying formal legal pleadings, discovery requests, or other documents pursuant to the applicable rules of civil procedure; or</text>
 </clause><clause id="H63A3087097E048F8A5F9DF34C8DAFA63"><enum>(ii)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">communicating in connection with a legal action to collect a debt on behalf of a client in, or at the direction of, a court of law (including in depositions or settlement conferences) or in the enforcement of a judgment; and</text></clause></subparagraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
 </paragraph></section><section id="HA91D0E4F92694CAFAA1F938E90F6C957"><enum>3.</enum><header>Amendment to Bureau authority with respect to practice of law</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 1027(e)(2)(B) of the Consumer Financial Protection Act of 2010 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/12/5517">12 U.S.C. 5517(e)(2)(B)</external-xref>) is amended by striking the period at the end and inserting <quote>, unless such financial product or service is provided by a licensed attorney who is not a debt collector as described under section 803(6)(F) of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.</quote>.</text>
