			 Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and any other possession of the United
			 States.</official-title></form>

 <section id="HFB4662C9F22947A6934C460EB1167047" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>U.S. Territories Investor Protection Act of 2017</short-title></quote>.</text> </section><section id="H5C2C10137BF745A885BD18CA131A06AC" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header>Termination of exemption</header> <subsection id="H2B4A4296D9134207BDA2E10CE416DAF1"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 6(a) of the Investment Company Act of 1940 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/15/80a-6">15 U.S.C. 80a–6(a)</external-xref>) is amended by striking paragraph (1).</text>
			</subsection><subsection id="H4D74120629204655AE0CA983E5927B93"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective date and safe harbor</header>
 <paragraph id="H986E00FB645240EFBB5381B92559108B"><enum>(1)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Except as provided in paragraph (2), the amendment made by subsection (a) shall take effect on the date of the enactment of this Act.</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="H82F5CFA60A9A40BE9418E8003F75D49D"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Safe harbor</header><text>With respect to a company that is exempt under section 6(a)(1) of the Investment Company Act of 1940 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/15/80a-6">15 U.S.C. 80a–6(a)(1)</external-xref>) on the day before the date of the enactment of this Act, the amendment made by subsection (a) shall take effect on the date that is 3 years after the date of the enactment of this Act.</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="HCE784B2EE63D414184DDCA7A888E18E7"><enum>(3)</enum><header>Extension of safe harbor</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The Securities and Exchange Commission, by rule and regulation upon its own motion, or by order upon application, may conditionally or unconditionally, under section 6(c) of the Investment Company Act of 1940 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/15/80a-6">15 U.S.C. 80a–6(c)</external-xref>), further delay the effective date for a company described in paragraph (2) for a maximum of 3 years following the initial 3-year period if, before the end of the initial 3-year period, the Commission determines that such a rule, regulation, motion, or order is necessary or appropriate in the public interest and for the protection of investors.</text>
