 <section id="id2735758491A547BAA204B8163575906F" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Servicemember and Veteran Protection Act of 2015</short-title></quote>.</text> </section><section id="idB00B5E65BCD342A7B03E9F391F9DBD50" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header>Deferral of students loans for certain period in connection with receipt of orders for mobilization for war or national emergency</header> <subsection id="id16D5AE0610E4423D92993A992A296016"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Federal Family Education Loans</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 428(b)(1)(M) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/1078">20 U.S.C. 1078(b)(1)(M)</external-xref>) is amended—</text>
 <paragraph id="id5DA540BE0FC14BA6B77C1F2AB3F908E6"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in the matter preceding clause (i), by striking <quote>, during any period</quote>;</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="idD0CC700A9E81433EA1353D1872EAD8E6"><enum>(2)</enum><text>in clause (i), by striking <quote>during which</quote> and inserting <quote>during any period during which</quote>;</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="id3312E2CF0A03417BB727B3966F03B9F0"><enum>(3)</enum><text>in clause (ii), by striking <quote>during which</quote> and inserting <quote>during any period during which</quote>;</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="idA9D8FEFE1F8F420BBE878C7EF031EE32"><enum>(4)</enum><text>in clause (iii)—</text>
 <subparagraph id="id96D65238D4EB45F9A7D6D86589A818A6"><enum>(A)</enum><text>by striking <quote>during which</quote> and inserting <quote>during any period during which</quote>; and</text>
 </subparagraph><subparagraph id="id8018F1C92BDD4476ABDFA197278A6414"><enum>(B)</enum><text>in the matter following subclause (II), by striking <quote>or</quote> after the semicolon;</text>
 </subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="idE9CFB0598F174C9AAB6A48F48C26ABCB"><enum>(5)</enum><text>by redesignating clause (iv) as clause (vi);</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="id51B1445DE893483B826A8C133104AC15"><enum>(6)</enum><text>by inserting after clause (iii) the following:</text>
					<quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id56A1143292E440A69F1E8CF4588A09B0" style="OLC">
 <clause id="idF580F16BFC84401DA59B54C506B946DB"><enum>(iv)</enum><text>in the case of any borrower who has received a call or order to duty described in subclause (I) or (II) of clause (iii), during the shorter of—</text>
 <subclause id="idB200B6C7075246ECB39C2A540C7B5BAB"><enum>(I)</enum><text>the period beginning on the date such call or order to duty is received by the borrower and ending on the first day of the service described in subclause (I) or (II) of clause (iii); and</text>
 </subclause><subclause id="idDFBE7828BFA94EE881EA4F76A2E5DD9C"><enum>(II)</enum><text>the 180-day period preceding the first day of such service;</text>
 </subclause></clause><clause id="idD16B2CB9D9BE45EB8AA468DA185B933E"><enum>(v)</enum><text>notwithstanding clause (iv)—</text>
 <subclause id="id5BA0E392D7714BB19E1F3C9442D15319"><enum>(I)</enum><text>in the case of any borrower described in such clause whose call or order to duty is cancelled before the first day of the service described in subclause (I) or (II) of clause (iii) because of a personal injury in connection with training to prepare for such service, during the period described in clause (iv) and during an additional period equal to the duration of such service, as specified by or otherwise determined in the original call or order to duty; and</text>
 </subclause><subclause id="idEC9BF7C9B74940C086C391EDD11E62EA"><enum>(II)</enum><text>in the case of any borrower whose call or order to duty is cancelled before the first day of such service for a reason other than an injury described in subclause (I), during the period beginning on the date the call or order to duty is received by the borrower and ending on the date that is 14 days after such call or order to duty is cancelled; and</text></subclause></clause><after-quoted-block>;
				and</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="id55B377599A36482498D2285E163E6E58"><enum>(7)</enum><text>in clause (vi) (as redesignated by paragraph (5)), by striking <quote>not in excess</quote> and inserting <quote>during any period not in excess</quote>.</text>
				</paragraph></subsection><subsection id="idC5DD5D09538845C4949EAB2F556A5F1C"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Direct
 Loans</header><text>Section 455(f)(2) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/1087e">20 U.S.C. 1087e(f)(2)</external-xref>) is amended—</text>
 <paragraph id="id5B37EF39A8E041E5A08E425169B09D1A"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in the matter preceding subparagraph (A), by striking <quote>during any period</quote>;</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="id9F75804193824156871EBEA08DE85226"><enum>(2)</enum><text>in subparagraph (A), by striking <quote>during which</quote> and inserting <quote>during any period during which</quote>;</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="id90E74B5B7D87462A84ED9FB8DA504295"><enum>(3)</enum><text>in subparagraph (B), by striking <quote>not in excess</quote> and inserting <quote>during any period not in excess</quote>;</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="id6D5E29B268AE4CDB9C28BDC5AB47B78C"><enum>(4)</enum><text>in subparagraph (C)—</text>
 <subparagraph id="id00E349BDB6444193BBCF667469089598"><enum>(A)</enum><text>by striking <quote>during which</quote> and inserting <quote>during any period during which</quote>; and</text>
 </subparagraph><subparagraph id="id841ECD1651FB4C829D2DA80780BC95C4"><enum>(B)</enum><text>in the matter following clause (ii), by striking <quote>or</quote> after the semicolon;</text>
 </subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="id0FB9393496B04CE685CD954DD924CD71"><enum>(5)</enum><text>by redesignating subparagraph (D) as subparagraph (F);</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="id995DD0AD07E84C44AF00146D0413A6C2"><enum>(6)</enum><text>by inserting after subparagraph (C) the following:</text>
					<quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idDF99D2AA79D44525962F9D8B043346C6" style="OLC">
 <subparagraph id="id01C5F62145E8444F900E743B0EC8325F"><enum>(D)</enum><text>in the case of any borrower who has received a call or order to duty described in clause (i) or (ii) of subparagraph (C), during the shorter of—</text>
 <clause id="id4BAAE9BCBC5849F0A6E7E6B6AF1F4A0D"><enum>(i)</enum><text>the period beginning on the date such call or order to duty is received by the borrower and ending on the first day of the service described in clause (i) or (ii) of subparagraph (C); and</text>
 </clause><clause id="idB94DA55A1FD34DCD912503C9FE002CBF"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>the 180-day period preceding the first day of such service;</text>
 </clause></subparagraph><subparagraph id="id4738FEC0F6A14AD08311E6EC919CB05D"><enum>(E)</enum><text>notwithstanding subparagraph (D)—</text>
 <clause id="idF600F02DF575485D950AF570BE063FB1"><enum>(i)</enum><text>in the case of any borrower described in such subparagraph whose call or order to duty is cancelled before the first day of the service described in clause (i) or (ii) of subparagraph (C) because of a personal injury in connection with training to prepare for such service, during the period described in subparagraph (D) and during an additional period equal to the duration of such service, as specified by or otherwise determined in the original call or order to duty; and</text>
 </clause><clause id="id170917CCD2114C6DAFAEA45CE9E44EC5"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>in the case of any borrower whose call or order to duty is cancelled before the first day of such service for a reason other than an injury described in clause (i), during the period beginning on the date the call or order to duty is received by the borrower and ending on the date that is 14 days after such call or order to duty is cancelled; and</text></clause></subparagraph><after-quoted-block>;
				and</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
 </paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id76954C3DCFB9492382F9D296E56B3B1A"><enum>(7)</enum><text>in subparagraph (F) (as redesignated by paragraph (5)), by striking <quote>not in excess</quote> and inserting <quote>during any period not in excess</quote>.</text>
				</paragraph></subsection><subsection id="id0612623F617B4CF1B6FBDE5C8F500396"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Perkins
 Loans</header><text>Section 464(c)(2)(A) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/1087dd">20 U.S.C. 1087dd(c)(2)(A)</external-xref>) is amended—</text>
 <paragraph id="id60BD7A869D644406BA62C3B4FC03158D"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in the matter preceding clause (i), by striking <quote>during any period</quote>;</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="id63172E22A03D4822965AD2553A423C8A"><enum>(2)</enum><text>in clause (i), by striking <quote>during which</quote> and inserting <quote>during any period during which</quote>;</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="idBF69D00AB22140408DE74F1E82D0A56C"><enum>(3)</enum><text>in clause (ii), by striking <quote>not in excess</quote> and inserting <quote>during any period not in excess</quote>;</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="id38BF5E318D44433DA98D7C3ED0D8999F"><enum>(4)</enum><text>in clause (iii), by striking <quote>during which</quote> and inserting <quote>during any period during which</quote>;</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="idA9A34C51AC4B45D993B2A7E254F633F8"><enum>(5)</enum><text>by redesignating clauses (iv) and (v) as clauses (vi) and (vii), respectively;</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="idC0523634DE254AC48B42D20D333DD063"><enum>(6)</enum><text>by inserting after clause (iii) the following:</text>

 <clause id="idE2A985B9FF0F4F0182E33702F342A97F" indent="up1"><enum>(iv)</enum><text>in the case of any borrower who has received a call or order to duty described in subclause (I) or (II) of clause (iii), during the shorter of—</text>
 <subclause id="id5004E1E6E3DA41F2A2376AC34D8B49A8"><enum>(I)</enum><text>the period beginning on the date such call or order to duty is received by the borrower and ending on the first day of the service described in subclause (I) or (II) of clause (iii); and</text>
 </subclause><subclause id="id20B921BDF47648949407DA5C522D3BF3"><enum>(II)</enum><text>the 180-day period preceding the first day of such service;</text>
 </subclause></clause><clause id="idB8518EE0E7794F2B9523217D61009D90" indent="up1"><enum>(v)</enum><text>notwithstanding clause (iv)—</text> <subclause id="id29FC94F09ACD4994BA70ED269A5ABF40"><enum>(I)</enum><text>in the case of any borrower described in such clause whose call or order to duty is cancelled before the first day of the service described in subclause (I) or (II) of clause (iii) because of a personal injury in connection with training to prepare for such service, during the period described in clause (iv) and during an additional period equal to the duration of such service, as specified by or otherwise determined in the original call or order to duty; and</text>
 </subclause><subclause id="id2EBC051F127A4E538E8345B938C16709"><enum>(II)</enum><text>in the case of any borrower whose call or order to duty is cancelled before the first day of such service for a reason other than an injury described in subclause (I), during the period beginning on the date the call or order to duty is received by the borrower and ending on the date that is 14 days after such call or order to duty is cancelled;</text></subclause></clause><after-quoted-block>;
				</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="id2FFFBEB7D76B4F268103103DBE23E42D"><enum>(7)</enum><text>in clause (vi) (as redesignated by paragraph (5)), by striking <quote>not in excess</quote> and inserting <quote>during any period not in excess</quote>; and</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="id420EF89AA50D4E88ABE961CDF60EB697"><enum>(8)</enum><text>in clause (vii) (as redesignated by paragraph (5)), by striking <quote>during which</quote> and inserting <quote>during any period during which</quote>.</text>
				</paragraph></subsection><subsection commented="no" id="idB9037A85990949A79EFBA982E25B35E1"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Rule of
 construction</header><text>Nothing in the amendments made by this section shall be construed to authorize any refunding of any repayment of a loan.</text>
 </subsection><subsection id="id3CCEAE8126B44FB59E952F64773D6752"><enum>(e)</enum><header>Applicability</header><text>The amendments made by this section shall apply with respect to all loans made, insured, or guaranteed under title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/1070">20 U.S.C. 1070 et seq.</external-xref>).</text>
			</subsection><subsection id="id5FFE09BDB65643D98F8C8FDB7FB4A81A"><enum>(f)</enum><header>Conforming
 amendments</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/1070">20 U.S.C. 1070 et seq.</external-xref>) is further amended—</text>
 <paragraph id="idCDEA24B1B776485BAAF918E04FA12220"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in section 428B(d)(1)(A)(ii) (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/1078-2">20 U.S.C. 1078–2(d)(1)(A)(ii)</external-xref>), by striking <quote>428(b)(1)(M)(i)(I)</quote> and inserting <quote>or clause (i)(I), (iv), or (v) of section 428(b)(1)(M)</quote>; and</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="id179339A098634D74A461B4EB04495034"><enum>(2)</enum><text>in section 493D(a) (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/1098f">20 U.S.C. 1098f(a)</external-xref>), by striking <quote>section 428(b)(1)(M)(iii), 455(f)(2)(C), or 464(c)(2)(A)(iii)</quote> and inserting <quote>clause (iii) or (iv) of section 428(b)(1)(M), subparagraph (C) or (D) of section 455(f)(2), or clause (iii) or (iv) of section 464(c)(2)(A)</quote>.</text>
				</paragraph></subsection></section><section id="id4CFF8A3E289D4D599F858AF9D466C09B" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>3.</enum><header>Modification of basis
			 for annual adjustments in amounts of educational assistance for members of
			 the
			 Selected Reserve</header>
			<subsection id="id8576208E586E420193E6314AA035059C"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In
 general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 16131(b)(2) of title 10, United States Code, is amended by striking <quote>equal to</quote> and all that follows and inserting the following: “not less than the percentage by which—</text>
				<quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idB7FB6A001C434CBBA90E40921D6A6F29" style="OLC">
 <subparagraph id="id87BEAC863CCC4ADBBFF0B4DCCDA9F72E" indent="up1"><enum>(A)</enum><text>the average cost of undergraduate tuition in the United States, as determined by the National Center for Education Statistics, for the last academic year preceding the beginning of the fiscal year for which the increase is made, exceeds</text>
 </subparagraph><subparagraph id="idB46454D504794A738709E01FB797E1DD" indent="up1"><enum>(B)</enum><text>the average cost of undergraduate tuition in the United States, as so determined, for the academic year preceding the academic year described in subparagraph (A).</text>
					</subparagraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
			</subsection><subsection commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id9F182C4BDE074D16A3A51CADD8D15FFC"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective
 date</header><text>The amendment made by subsection (a) shall take effect on October 1, 2015, and shall apply to adjustments in amounts of educational assistance for members of the Selected Reserve that are made for fiscal years beginning on or after that date.</text>
			</subsection></section><section id="idB3E591DAFE814DA0A293852207350ED7"><enum>4.</enum><header>Credit protections for servicemembers</header>
 <subsection id="id7C8EF424342F40239E2CCE6C1D464F37"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Active duty freeze alerts</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Section 605A of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/15/1681c-1">15 U.S.C. 1681c–1</external-xref>) is amended—</text> <paragraph id="id9809AF9644D5466F8889815B4AE00166"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in the heading for such section, by striking <quote><header-in-text level="section" style="OLC">and active duty alerts</header-in-text></quote> and inserting <quote><header-in-text level="section" style="OLC">, active duty alerts, and active duty freeze alerts</header-in-text></quote>;</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="id8590D69B3F6B4A68944A29F1A9658BD6"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by redesignating subsections (d) through (h) as subsections (e) through (i), respectively;</text> </paragraph><paragraph id="id13BB3A1B114945218258110907199D0A"><enum>(3)</enum><text>by inserting after subsection (c) the following:</text>
					<quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id7C545B39BFE54CE18FE339AA38918542" style="OLC">
						<subsection id="ID29386C083F0744FEA37B1FD51965DC19">
							<enum>(d)</enum>
							<header>Active duty freeze alerts</header>
 <text>Upon the direct request of an active duty military consumer, or an individual acting on behalf of or as a personal representative of an active duty military consumer, a consumer reporting agency described in section 603(p) that maintains a file on the active duty military consumer and has received appropriate proof of the identity of the requester shall—</text>
							<paragraph id="ID3F8BA01D6F2F47D3B94880929C00917E">
								<enum>(1)</enum>
 <text>include an active duty freeze alert in the file of that active duty military consumer, and also provide that alert along with any credit score generated in using that file, during a period of not less than 12 months, or such longer period as the Bureau shall determine, by regulation, beginning on the date of the request, unless the active duty military consumer or such representative requests that such freeze alert be removed before the end of such period, and the agency has received appropriate proof of the identity of the requester for such purpose;</text>
							</paragraph><paragraph id="IDCF74338954534D16B3A07CE519CEC2FB">
								<enum>(2)</enum>
 <text>during the 2-year period beginning on the date of such request, exclude the active duty military consumer from any list of consumers prepared by the consumer reporting agency and provided to any third party to offer credit or insurance to the consumer as part of a transaction that was not initiated by the consumer, unless the consumer requests that such exclusion be rescinded before the end of such period; and</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="ID2369D2F96CE549488D3B5E0900B31D32"><enum>(3)</enum><text>refer the information regarding the active duty freeze alert to each of the other consumer reporting agencies described in section 603(p), in accordance with procedures developed under section 621(f).</text></paragraph></subsection><after-quoted-block>;</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="id1EF0DDEB5EA34BE1A987B31645550FAA"><enum>(4)</enum><text>in subsection (e), as so redesignated—</text> <subparagraph id="id013C76A615B04C5A9A69040260657F4D"><enum>(A)</enum><text>by striking <quote>extended, and active duty alerts</quote> and inserting <quote>extended, active duty, and active duty freeze alerts</quote>; and</text>
 </subparagraph><subparagraph id="idB804DA1DB46F40DE9A7C69510E93C6A4"><enum>(B)</enum><text>by striking <quote>extended, or active duty alerts</quote> and inserting <quote>extended, active duty, or active duty freeze alerts</quote>;</text> </subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="id6A15675B45574212A3BE211D8100385C"><enum>(5)</enum><text>in subsection (f), as so redesignated—</text>
 <subparagraph id="idC8E463C11BCB414991209DAAB6779FA0"><enum>(A)</enum><text>in the matter preceding paragraph (1), by striking <quote>or active duty alert</quote> and inserting <quote>active duty alert, or active duty freeze alert</quote>;</text> </subparagraph><subparagraph id="idDDC8F39AEF6142DAA495DF2EEF899991"><enum>(B)</enum><text>in paragraph (2), by striking <quote>; and</quote> and inserting a semicolon;</text>
 </subparagraph><subparagraph id="idA6619A8D920442E4B20621743074D66D"><enum>(C)</enum><text>in paragraph (3), by striking the period and inserting <quote>; and</quote>; and</text> </subparagraph><subparagraph id="idDE9ED6500E9A41B39EF29B36C7D0B369"><enum>(D)</enum><text>by adding at the end the following:</text>
						<quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idF280DC4BAF5347CAB67806A2042E6124" style="OLC">
 <paragraph id="idE5DD6D9BBC454517A4483FA3FD0B19AB"><enum>(4)</enum><text>paragraphs (1) and (2) of subsection (d), in the case of a referral under subsection (d)(3).</text></paragraph><after-quoted-block>;</after-quoted-block></quoted-block> </subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="id8B866C0C32B148CFBA4C3F98226A2C8E"><enum>(6)</enum><text>in subsection (g), as so redesignated, by striking <quote>or active duty alert</quote> and inserting <quote>active duty alert, or active duty freeze alert</quote>; and</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="idF8DFFDF8590440EF914B03B7C75C1290"><enum>(7)</enum><text>in subsection (i), as so redesignated, by adding at the end the following:</text> <quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id6FAEBACAD35D42D4A5F2CE9AE65DA1B9" style="OLC"> <paragraph id="ID422458B423C04860AA72677B4F7FB388"> <enum>(3)</enum> <header>Requirements for active duty freeze alerts</header> <subparagraph id="IDB44EE76A0D8246E89BF0A9F1AC90EBBA"> <enum>(A)</enum> <header>Notification</header> <text>Each active duty freeze alert under this section shall include information that notifies all prospective users of a consumer report on the consumer to which the freeze alert relates that the consumer does not authorize the establishment of any new credit plan or extension of credit, including any credit under an open-end credit plan (as defined in section 103(i)), in the name of the consumer, or issuance of an additional card on an existing credit account requested by a consumer, or any increase in credit limit on an existing credit account requested by a consumer.</text>
							</subparagraph><subparagraph id="ID5FEA068B5CE24FD08FDCACAF1695E7A2">
								<enum>(B)</enum>
 <header>Prohibition on users</header><text>No prospective user of a consumer report that includes an active duty freeze alert in accordance with this section may establish a new credit plan or extension of credit, including any credit under an open-end credit plan (as defined in section 103(i)), in the name of the consumer, or issue an additional card on an existing credit account requested by a consumer, or grant any increase in credit limit on an existing credit account requested by a consumer.</text></subparagraph></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block>
 </paragraph></subsection><subsection id="id17708C651D284D6B8A7417D852E34AD6"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Rulemaking</header><text>The Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection shall prescribe regulations to define what constitutes appropriate proof of identity for purposes of section 605A(d) of the <act-name parsable-cite="FCRA">Fair Credit Reporting Act</act-name>, as amended by this Act.</text>
 </subsection><subsection id="id4674598947EC44639FB4F700FD128972"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Technical amendment</header><text>Section 603(q)(2) of the <act-name parsable-cite="FCRA">Fair Credit Reporting Act</act-name> (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/15/1681a">15 U.S.C. 1681a(q)(2)</external-xref>) is amended—</text> <paragraph id="id0E4E8436088A4CB2A03D4AD478ECDE01"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in the heading for such paragraph, by striking <quote><header-in-text level="paragraph" style="OLC">active duty alert</header-in-text></quote> and inserting <quote><header-in-text level="paragraph" style="OLC">active duty alert; active duty freeze alert</header-in-text></quote>; and</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph id="id0AA5529B00BE4DB887F861F0DFF1A1A7"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by inserting <quote>and <quote>active duty freeze alert</quote></quote> before <quote>mean</quote>.</text> </paragraph></subsection></section><section commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id6665C04FE61847448EB586A434F8DE9F"><enum>5.</enum><header>Report on effect on privacy of veterans by use of social security numbers to uniquely identify veterans</header> <subsection commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id244236B61DD341658D49C361B17B9A28"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Not later than 120 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs shall submit to the Committee on Veterans' Affairs of the Senate and the Committee on Veterans' Affairs of the House of Representatives a report on the effect on the privacy of veterans of the use of social security numbers to uniquely identify veterans.</text>
 </subsection><subsection commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id61D4848E59AD40A596CF4A862981F956"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Contents</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The report required by subsection (a) shall include the following:</text>
 <paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id37B3451868FD4B25A9145EB9B5DCC1B2"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">A description of such actions as the Secretary may have taken to transition the Department of Veterans Affairs from the use of social security numbers to uniquely identify veterans to the use of alternative and safer unique identifiers.</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id6E09A940775B4EC3942638E16F0EB8F6"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">A description of such actions as the Secretary may have taken to integrate the use by the Department of Veterans Affairs of such alternative and safer unique identifiers with the usage of unique identifiers by the Department of Defense.</text>
 </paragraph><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id6CB4FD98967B46D6A65FA2009C4A089D"><enum>(3)</enum><text>In a case in which the Secretary has not taken any actions described in paragraph (1) or (2), an explanation as to why such actions have not been taken and a description of the actions the Secretary will take to protect the privacy of veterans.</text></paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body>
