		<section id="idD2CD82FB8EA14E35A17FA64C5AE424DC" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Make Student Grants Truly Tax-Free Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="id30265FAC38E64B50AA7D882AC84DDCAB" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header>Expansion of qualified scholarship exclusion from gross income</header><subsection id="idBF567464011E49E0A29F967D828FB24C"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text>Paragraph (1) of <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/26/117">section 117(b)</external-xref> of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 is amended—</text><paragraph id="id83E6465B9E6940A99DE867DE3479149C"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by striking <quote>received by an individual as a scholarship</quote> and inserting</text><quoted-block display-inline="yes-display-inline" id="idD25F68546EB343198844339D8237A50B" style="tax"><text>received by an individual—</text><subparagraph id="idE384BA6014A74ED2BA47277E2353A847"><enum>(A)</enum><text>as a scholarship</text></subparagraph><after-quoted-block>,</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph><paragraph id="idF10FE273E9F34B9A96483B327B58DC6C"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by striking the period at the end and inserting a comma, and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id9229B85DFC5C411293AF81E6C3865FD3"><enum>(3)</enum><text>by adding at the end the following new subparagraphs:</text><quoted-block display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id1ED25705C8B94AB4B016EBA68A2EDBDB" style="tax"><subparagraph id="id50424EF030074DD5A340B4AAEDEB2CA6"><enum>(B)</enum><text>through a scholarship or fellowship grant program administered by the Secretary of Education that
			 is based on
			 financial need,
			 including a Federal Pell Grant under section 401 of the Higher
			 Education Act of 1965 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/1070a">20 U.S.C. 1070a</external-xref>), or</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="id5AE4CA1776BE4C0CB171F0384EB686CC"><enum>(C)</enum><text>as an Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant under section 420R of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20
			 U.S.C. 1070h).</text></subparagraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="id320F422B75744EB8A29B5C1780D3D82E"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text>The amendments made by this Act shall apply to taxable years beginning after December 31, 2014.</text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
