- Abstract
- One is faced with the task of estimating currents for some oceanographic studies. Only mean flow data are needed for many applications. Because it is not only difficult but very expensive to gather direct current measurements, it is reasonable to attempt a theoretical description. To do this, equations representing flow must be formulated and solved. This requires the use of many variables and nonlinear equations. In diagnostic modeling, certain factors (e.g., temperature and salinity) are not used as variables but instead are obtained by direct measurement. A diagnostic model, therefore, solves for the current field, subject to some observed density distribution in combination with the equations of motion.
