A comprehensive marine environmental benchmark survey of the Southern California coastal region was supported by the US DOI from 1975 through 1977 to describe and quantify the chemical, geological, and biological characteristics of the area. Several facets of research make up this study including benthic studies, taxonomic and systematic studies of the macroepibiota, determinations of seasonal and yearly distribution and abundance patterns in standing stocks, temporal and spatial analysis of community organization, identification of mussel communities, remote sensing of kelp beds, hydrocarbon studies, and trace metal studies of intertidal sediments and biota.
