This study explored the long-term effects of satellite tagging on blue and gray whales. Researchers tracked over 200 whales tagged between 1993 and 2013, using photos and genetic data to monitor healing and health. Tagged whales were compared to untagged ones seen in the same areas. While skin reactions like swelling and scarring were common, there was no strong evidence that tagging affected survival. Tag type and placement did influence how severe the reactions were, and long-term monitoring of affected individuals helped researchers measure the impacts of tagging to whale health.
