About the Compilation of Presidential Documents

What is the Compilation of Presidential Documents?

The Compilation of Presidential Documents (CPD) collection is composed of the Daily Compilation of Presidential Documents and its predecessor, the Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents. It is published by the Office of the Federal Register, National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) under the authority of the Federal Register Act, (44 U.S.C. Ch. 15; 1 CFR part 10).

Documents appearing in the Compilation of Presidential Documents collection are edited for accuracy and annotated with additional information to provide an authoritative record of the Presidency. It includes such material as:

  • Proclamations
  • Executive orders
  • Speeches
  • Press conferences
  • Communications to Congress and Federal agencies
  • Statements regarding bill signings and vetoes
  • Appointments, nominations
  • Reorganization plans
  • Resignations
  • Retirements
  • Acts approved by the President
  • Nominations submitted to the Senate
  • White House announcements
  • Press releases

What is available?

This collection integrates material from the weekly publication dating from 1993, with Daily Compilation material as published from January 20, 2009 – forward. The website will be updated frequently, as information is released by the White House press office to Federal Register editors.

Searching the Compilation of Presidential Documents

You can find and search the Compilation of Presidential Documents by:

  • Using Basic Search for keyword and metadata fielded searches,
  • Using Advanced Search; fields specific to the CPD will display after you select Compilation of Presidential Documents in the Refine by Collection column,

  • Using Basic Search, enter: collection:cpd presdocnum:2005-16
  • Using Advanced Search, select Compilation of Presidential Documents under Refine by Collection, then under Search In select Presidential Document Number from the first box and enter 2005-16 in the next box

Search Presidential Documents by Document Category – For example, presidential documents that are proclamations.

  • Using Basic Search, enter: cpdcategory:proclamation
  • Using Advanced Search, select Compilation of Presidential Documents under Refine by Collection, then under Search In select Document Category from the first box and enter proclamation in the next box

Search Presidential Documents by Date Range and Keyword – For example, presidential documents between April 1, 2008 and May 30, 2008 with the keyword basketball.

  • Using Basic Search, enter: basketball collection:cpd publishdate:range(2008-04-01,2008-05-30)
  • Using Advanced Search, select Date is Between from the box under Date Range, enter or select 04/01/2008 in the next box and enter or select 05/30/2008 from the last box, select Compilation of Presidential Documents under Refine by Collection, then under Search In enter basketball in the second box

Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents URLs

govinfo uses two key pieces of information to construct predictable URLs to documents and the Details pages. The Granule ID for the Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents is used to identify the individual documents within a weekly issue and the Package ID is used to identify an individual weekly issue.

Ingestion Date

The date the document was ingested into the preservation repository.

The URL where the document or the document in context (the content detail page) is located.

Volume

A new volume of the Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents is started every year. Volumes 29 (1993) through Volume 44 (2008) are available on-line. It is expected that after year 2008 the CPD will switch to a daily compilation format.
